Nova Cavs 16u

I don't understand why Lewis and the other really weak FCPS teams aren't allowed to compete in a lower division.

Do these coaches really prioritize unskilled big guys over better players that might be smaller?

AAU coaches with son's who are the starting PG? Yes. Then they don't let the big guys shoot jumpers or dribble. They rarely take many guards, they don't want their own kid to have to share playtime or be worse than a bench guard.

I have seen this dynamic a LOT.

It is surprisingly hard in the basketball world to find a coach willing to develop all his players'. Big kids only allowed to be role players is pathetic and common and bad coaching.

So the kids who tried out and didn't make the Cavs teams--did they send you a rejection email? It sounds like they aren't contacting any of the kids who didn't make the first two teams to attend all these supplemental tryouts?

It is a very strange way to run tryouts.

My DS had a long talk with I believe Weinstein and Byrnes at the second tryout, and received an email for an invite only tryout the following week. I know some players received a rejection email after the second tryout, so I am not sure why Bermudez did not just pick up players who already tried out.

i looked at his instagram. He bragged about his Chantilly JV team beating Lewis like 80-8. That's so cringe. Let your bench start or play in that game at least. Why is the absolute biggest HS in FCPS even playing Lewis???

So cringe. If you look at the rosters on the Nova Cavs website from last year compared to the Weinstein roster this year, it looks like Weinstein has almost an entirely new team and added one player from Bermudez last year. I am not sure where all of the other Bermudez players went, maybe to the Byrnes team?

They upgraded to other teams.

Byrnes has had almost the same kids for several years.

I cannot wait to see the rest of the rosters posted, especially after so many tryouts for Bermudez.

The VHSL divisions are based on the enrollments and Lewis still has an enrollment larger than most schools in VA. At one point Lewis and TJ were in a lower division (Class 5 vs. Class 6) but they got bumped up to Class 6. That will run at least through 2026-27, although there's been some question as to whether FCPS will pull out of VHSL.

Typically, when FCPS schools are at risk of being sent to a lower division, they appeal to VHSL so they won't have to travel longer distances. VHSL was going to relegate Langley to Class 5 a few years ago and they succesfully appealed to stay in Class 6.

Lewis does play in the district that is generally the weakest sports division in NoVa (National District), although Hayfield is also in that district and is a strong team.

Still no roster? No one wants to play on this team?

Based on things I have heard, they have a final roster. It seems like Bermudez kid, a few players from the year before, and new kids I do not recognize.
