Democrats are defining "equity" as "equal outcomes" among groups. So yes, people are against equity because you can't FORCE equal outcomes. I have several children and I couldn't FORCE them all to have the exact same grades, social experience or skill/achievement on the soccer field etc., and they have the same parenting, food quality, and home environment. All I could do was provide them equality/fairness-- same high-quality food, teaching each to read, attention, good clothing/shoes, adequate sleep etc. etc. If parents can't force equal outcomes among their own children, having so much control over their environments, how is a government supposed to achieve equal outcomes among racial groups? How do we have it so Asians, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics have the exact same percentages of soccer goalies, flute players, choral soloists, football captains, class presidents, AP Chemistry enrollees, etc. Not to mention that outcomes vary not only by racial group, but defining them can be tricky (are we counting the kid with the black mom and white dad as black? the kid with the Chinese dad and white mom as white?) then if you dig in further you will find variations among ethnicities. Ever looked up the wealth of differing Asian groups? Americans of Japanese heritage fare differently than those from Mongolia. Cubans are different than Columbians. Both of those have people among them who are 'black" as well as those who have that Native american/mestizo phentoype. How productive is it to categorize everyone as accurately as possible, put them in their boxes and then try to force one box to be the same as the next? The schools need to provide quality teachers, equal facilities, fair discipline (no suspending an Asian kid Monday for an infraction that just got a Hispanic kid a talking to the previous Friday. No letting the teacher's favorite get away with murder while coming down on like a ton of bricks on another kid) etc. for all the children. The rest is up to the kids and the parents. |
+1. This has always been an absurdity about ACPS. But even now, as they develop their medium term strategic plan, there is very little about educational excellence and academic outcomes. It’s like they are allergic to the idea. |
Most people in Arlington just vote the Dem party line for school board and the “primary” process is flawed so the school board hardly reflects the will of the people. I hate Trump but do think that democrats in ed policy has become way too focused on trans kids and equity than actual learning. The worst part is that the people pushing this at a national level have their kids in private school. The trends in reading and math score should be a big concern to everyone and yet no one is talking about it because no one cares. |
If APS is hiring security guards to keep sex offenders out of locker rooms, I'm all for it. I don't want a sex offender in locker rooms of either sex, do you? Or are you a-ok with one in a boys room? |
THe problem was that Arlington was not comfortable telling someone trans that they needed to use the individual locker rooms. ALso, since this pool is used by the entire community I really wish this cost was not paid by the school system. |
Class size absolutely does play a role on students learning… I can tell you’re a non educator |
APS has been sinking since before COVID. The current APS Admin (has nothing to do with political beliefs) is soulless. They are there to collect a paycheck. If you can afford a private school find a program that your child will love and go with it. Need to find programs that actually put our children first. |
the problem is they were not screening for sex offenders in locker rooms. |
Class size is only relevant when you have stupid policies such as letting sped kids, esl kids, crazy kids, and otherwise below grade level kids into normal classrooms. Just one or two of these kids in a 20 person stem class will grind the pace down. A 50 student class with all at or above level and no performative or behavior issues or IEPs will be much better. Somehow people like the pp have redefined normal to mean not the norm and include everything but the norm. Stop expecting normal kids to pause their learning to boost your kids. |
DP. Public schools educate everyone. Your smug statement seems to have no regard for the kids who do need extra help. Sure, some kids have severe issues & would be better served in a separate classroom. But lumping those kids together with anyone slightly below grade level is a terrible, unproductive idea, too. And what about my 2E kid who has an IEP but is also classified as gifted? Where would you put her? |
and just what do you think is normal? my IEP kid helps the "normal" kids with their math. |
+1. My DD has ADHD but when she is able to actually focus, she blows all the standardized tests out of the water. She needs her medication and some gentle redirection, not to be sent to a separate classroom or to have her medication taken away by RFK Jr. |
