Are people canceling summer vacations or not really that concerned yet?

I am a teacher so I’m fine. But my husband makes 3x my salary and he’s not a fed but his company does work with all the fed agencies which are currently blocked up by DOGE. Things are iffy. Not panicking, but not planning any big travel in the meantime either. I am not sure if a lot of people in DC are prepared for economic downturn since they’ve not typically been impacted the way they’re about to be. If your house is paid off or you’re empty nesters or have a million liquid I get it but for most people, even the combined $300k+ earners, your monthly expenses are significant enough to not want to be blowing through money in such an uncertain time. Just my opinion.

We have cancelled it because it was going to be very expensive, like 10K.

What national parks are on the California coast?

Google and reading comprehension are your friend.

PP said they would do both. You can drive the coast and then head out Yosemite or something.

Also three of the biggest CA parks are on the coast:
Redwoods
Pinnacle
Channel Islands

Single income family with federal contractor here. We are not canceling anything. We have planned properly for possible job loss and have various investments that are meant to be used if an extended period of unemployment occurs. Breadwinner also has math and science teaching skills and could certainly find employment quickly if necessary.

I’d be terrified to travel outside the USA unless I was mdd as king a permanent move out. They hate us more with every day, we voted this monster and his goon in to office

Just keep telling yourself that

I’d avoid any national parks because of the mass firings at national parks park service by m$sk
EMTs,firefighters, rangers, visitor experience plus 5% of staff. Fires will burn unchecked, bathrooms and campgrounds closed, and m&sk wants to drill for oil and minerals.
I’d go to a state park instead

I’m regretting our spring break trip but we are already booked so we’ll go. Not planning anything big for the summer and we’re pulling back on all other discretionary spending. I think it’s unlikely we’d lose our jobs but it’s possible I’ll need to take a pay cut due to company budget issues related to loss of federal funding and DH is a fed who could be impacted if cuts go very very deep. Plus worried about the economy in general.

I really feel badly for the parents who need to be making decisions about camps. We’re past the stage where we need them for childcare but we were considering programs for our teens and are no more.

We were planning to go to Europe for spring break but hadn’t purchased airfare or made any non-refundable plans yet (though we had done an extensive amount of planning). We decide to cancel both to save money and because I would feel uncomfortable as an American abroad right now.

How would everyone know you’re American? Are you wearing American flag clothing? People always seem to worry about this, but in my experience no one can tell where you’re from. We were just in Switzerland and were mistaken for other nationalities multiple times.

The PP who mentioned camps being an issue is on point. I have a few weeks already paid for but am otherwise holding off. If things change I’m sure I can find a summer nanny, but a lot of camps have fairly strict refund policies these days.

Also, if you or your spouse lose your job (God forbid), YOU can be the nanny. Money saved right there.

Have you amassed the recommended levels of emergency savings before this?

Wow… did you actually listen to the speech?

We’re cutting back. Just did a big trip to Disney and future trips will be local and low budget.

We are also getting more choosy with where we spent our money. One of our preferred beach towns tends towards the Trumpy in terms of the local business population. If I see the flags and attitude out this year, we will not be going back. They can figure out how to deal with their dropping rental rates, erosion and flooding problems, and labor pool/food inflation situation without my help. Besides, I can get one hell of a Canadian vacation for the same price.

We are not planning one.

Germany is not America. For one, they have banned their Nazi speech. And for good reason IMO. The harms aren’t theoretical to them.

+1

Who knows what the PPs twisted mind heard in that speech.
