Never been, but wondering if its even worth it. Going to Amsterdam for work and see cheap flights from there to Marsielles or Lyon for same price as Paris.

This would be in March

Yes. How is this even a question.

+1000. Duh. Do yourself a favor and take a flight to Marseille after your work trip. Spend a couple days and train up to Avignon or Lyon. Then train up to Paris at the end and fly home.

Hit the duty free shops in the airport, big discounts over US at most.

Thanks for mentioning this. On googling, I find that stops along the way in Bruges and Ghent in Belgium would be good.

Scandinavian airlines has cheap tickets now.

Love Paris. Have been there twice. Experience was only ruined by the company I kept.
I did not like Amsterdam at all the first time. They must have had a trash pick up day as it was everywhere. I enjoyed my time much more the second time.
Now I know to give a place a second chance.

If you have to ask this question, just get on the next flight back to the US from Amsterdam.

My very first trip to Europe was to Paris in March (thanks Gram!). It was a little cold and drizzly, but it’s a singular and amazing city - like New York, London, and only a couple of others.

The best time of year to visit Paris is rainy season. Incredibly romantic and less tourists!

Marseille is one of top drug trafficking centers of Europe, right up there with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels. It has its own VCs mois mafia and is mostly very poor housing projects. Ugly as hell, but will be cheap! It’s like saying you want to go to Tijuana.

The people saying Marseille is a skip are (understandably) very off base. It’s the current epicenter of what’s cool in France. That may very well not be your scene, but it’s a fascinating creative hub with incredible young energy. This is particularly enjoyable in its food scene which, as a refreshing juxtaposition to Paris or the rest of France, is filled with fast moving new concepts with young chefs. This is made possible because it’s a dirt cheap city.

Goudes, a Marseille suburb, is a quirky 9/10 and way under the radar. Plus it’s the north side gate to the Calanques.

Go to Paris though - start drinking at late lunches and walk everywhere. Make well researched dinner reservations in advance.

37 years living in France and the only French people I know who have gone to Marseille are the very young because it’s so inexpensive. It’s the last city in France me and my friends would go to.
