Anyone else's local shopping mall almost empty now due to fear of raids?

Also, no workers hanging around my local Home Depot in the mornings and most of the painting crews in my neighborhood (lots of repairs going on) have postponed some of the projects and my neighbors are boiling over mad about it since we are in an area where it is difficult to engage talented contractors since there is so much work. Another thing I've noticed recently, the McDonalds I go past three or four times a day and usually has very little line at the drive thru, all of a sudden is doubled lane packed all day. I suspect most of the contractors not going into our local Mexican businesses are just opting for the drive thru at this point. Can't blame them. Definitely a shift in behavior where I live. A noticeable shift.

I don't believe talented contractors need to hang around the Home Depot parking lot looking for work.

You are probably right. However, illegal immigrants who speak very little English and take these side jobs do, of course, your would never notice them as you probably look right past them. I know many like you.

I noticed this while at Walmart/Sams Club as well.

I don’t understand why anyone would be afraid?

T-rump is only going after illegal immigrants. So why is anyone staying home?

Are you illegal? Probably not, just stupid I guess.

Well, they must be illegals. So what is the concern?

How many people have actually stopped receiving a paycheck? Who knew that boring DC would be so dramatic!

They have American children to feed.

You are showing how unintelligent you are. Some people who are here legally are afraid of being out in public speaking Spanish to one another, because they feel it puts them at higher risk of getting caught up in a raid. Puerto Ricans are particularly nervous. Lots of stories flying around. Whether or not you think their fear is valid, is irrelevant. Being nervous is not the same as being guilty. Use your brain.

they should be.

ICE isn't roaming the streets grabbing people.

They are picking off easy targets who have properly provided their location to authorities or visited offices.

Irony alert.

All Puerto Ricans are American citizens.

ICE thinks anyone brown = illegal immigrant.

If you don't pass the paper bag test, you need to carry your US passport with you, even if you are a US citizen.

That’s because there was an ICE raid in the area recently.

NP. I’m seeing this as well, both in PG where we live and MoCo where I work. Other than grocery stores, foot traffic is way down.

I think it’s a bit less a fear of raids at the shopping mall while you’re there than a reluctance to spend money on household goods and clothing if you will be deported.

However, people are also afraid to go to work because of raids so they might have less disposable household income.

We have friends who are legal permanent residents and immigrants who are starting to move money outside of the U.S. and buy things like gold and jewelry that can be used to grease palms if necessary.

DH and I are not immigrants, but we are ADOS and concerned that U.S. born Blacks will be the next group targeted. We bought a new home this summer and almost immediately sunk another $30k into new appliances and other upgrades. Now we’re reluctant to spend another cent on nonessentials until we feel safe.
