DC area has the worst panic buyers. This is my guess why stores are running out. I’m from a northern state that regularly gets dumped on with snow. Never before had a witnessed the extreme panic buying that happens in DC before a few inches of snow is due. The bread, milk, and TP will be totally gone from all stores. It’s insane. This is probably why eggs seem scarce, but they aren’t.

It’s bc a massive supplier in Georgia that usually distributes to our area had to be quarantined and many wiped out, plus another one in Lehigh valley, plus an insane amount of eggs were stolen in central Pa from a distributor - like 40,000 eggs or something like that. So there is a sudden shortage in this area.
I’m pretty sure the egg robber plans to sell eggs in the streets - but where does one store that many eggs?

And what are you doing with them? How many eggs do you people eat that this is such a problem?

There are 4 of us, we each eat 2 breakfast M-F.

2x per person per day
8 per day/ 5 days a week

40 eggs

But we can eat bagels which maga apparently couldn’t do when Biden was in office and frump promised to reduce costs.

40 a week

How about we stop acting insane when a few food products aren’t available?

Giant brand regular large eggs are $6.99 in Wheaton. I’m glad I’m not much of an egg fan.

As a geneticist, I'd clamp down on that right now (and I've love a coop myself). There have been 11 outbreaks of bird flu in Montgomery County recently from backyard chicken coops. Our concern is that, just like with Covid-19, this avian virus will jump the species barrier given enough opportunities. This is exactly how zoonotic transmission works: by rolling the dice enough times when people start living in close proximity to animals that are viral reservoirs. Most zoonotic events happen in Asia, where human habitation and habits keep them in close contact with wildlife. But given the prevalence of H5N1 in our country, and in backyard poultry, it's not out of the question that the same thing could happen here. There have already been sporadic cases in humans, leading to one death last month in Louisiana. H5N1 has not yet mutated such that it is capable of efficient human to human transmission, like Covid-19 - but it might, if there's enough opportunity.

So... nix the coop for now, please.

I was just thinking about that. I got free eggs from a buddy of my son's (they have dairy goats and sell goat milk, I don't know if they sell eggs but they have hens)---got about 7 doz and getting to the last of them (none have gone bad yet, and I will use them until they do or are all gone).

But backyard chickens are going to mean more opportunities for the virus to spread, and without the containment and disinfectant protocols large operations use. The LA guy had handled sick birds, not sure if his own chickens or wild birds he found in his yard,

Thieves in the US state of Pennsylvania have stolen more than 100,000 eggs - worth $40,000 (£32,000) - from a single grocer.

The heist targeted the back of a lorry at Pete & Gerry's Organics in Greencastle on 1 February, police say.

(US but reported on BBC)

Surprised we haven't heard more about egg theft! But based on the price at my store those eggs were worth at least $60,000.

uh, $3.69 a dozen at my Giant. I just went and confirmed.

2.99 at Trader Joe’s. Maybe you all are shopping at the wrong stores

My Trader Joe’s has been out of eggs for weeks. They probably have some right at opening, but I haven’t been lucky enough to get any. They have also been out of the hardboiled ones in a bag.

Must be regional. I’m in Midwest and go a couple times per week. They are never out

Wild when Biden was in apparently eggs were $22 each in the Midwest.

Wait, what??? Midwest, sometimes they are out, but right now something like $7.50/doz.

Thank you! I’m not sure how to track local backyard outbreaks with the communication freeze. The only numbers I’m getting are from Game Commission regarding waterfowl.
With the news of avian flu clade now being found in dairy cattle milk in Nevada, it’s only a matter of time. Apparently it could be the European starlings nesting in barns, who pick it up from water fowl. But that is the clade that carries the bigger fatality rate.
Anyway. I personally wouldn’t buy from backyard flocks due to potential contamination.
Find an alternative to eggs.
