Does a cold alert warrant school closures?

Some are looking for any excuse to bring back virtual.

No they are not. If you have kids in the system, you would know that the delay or early release days are primarily to get kids fed. The students have about 30 min in each period usually in HS depending on type of bell schedule the school follows. It is better than zero minutes for the week though. It is a nice change of scenery for the students to be in school after three (and for some even longer when they decided last Thurs and Fri would also be part of their winter break) days at home.

Keep this post in mind next time MCEA or BoE proposes adding early release days to the calendar.

MCPS should have opened on time today, but obviously some people needed to be eased into it for some reason. If they had closed today, there's a decent chance there would have been pressure to make tomorrow a delayed start. Some even wanted to call both days off because the temperature is below 32F.

Oh, that’s rich. You’re the ones with no resilience. “OH NO, SNOW DAYS!! MY KIDS ARE HOME! THE SKY IS FALLING!” 🙄

That’s right call me crazy. Just because I want my kids to be educated. 😳

They are being educated, Becky. Snow days happen. Cope.

Bumping this up. I am seeing single digit temps with a high of 11 degrees for Tuesday next week. Now that is cold.

Has MCPS ever had a delayed opening due to cold temps? We have a lot of walkers at our school, and sidewalks are STILL not cleared (I understand building service workers are putting in overtime and doing their best but there’s so much ice and compacted snow, I’m just wondering if delays are ever considered for extreme temps).

Yes. MCPS has delayed for the cold in past years. I'm not sure of the temps, but wind chills were below zero.

By that standard schools would have to be closed for 2 weeks for 6 inches of snow. They didn't clean when the snow was fresh like most property owners did, so now it is going to be icy until it melts. It's telling that the icy patches I've run into are on MCPS properties. Perhaps they could procure some sand. It's available at local stores.

If buses can't start, there will be a delay. Usually that's when temps are in the low single digits. We'll see if Tuesday or Wednesday morning of next week qualifies.

The weather app on my phone is waaaay off. It’s says 10-12” of snow on Wednesday of next week and 4-5” the next day. Good thing that’s not the actual forecast!
