Does a cold alert warrant school closures?

It has, but the "feels like" temp with windchill was much lower than the one predicted for Thursday.

"Alert Montgomery - Cold Emergency Alert
Montgomery County has extended the Cold Emergency Alert until Friday, 1/10 at 1pm. Residents should be prepared for wind chill values to be below 20 degrees. These dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes and/or hypothermia. Stay indoors if possible."

Wondering if MCPS will considering staying closed for the rest of the week.

You must be kidding or a troll. This is still *well* into outdoor recess temperature in rational parts of the country.

Yes, but well below the temperature and wind chill we're going to be at. These aren't "super cold temps."

Those kids have the proper gear.

If we open, many walkers will either stay home or arrive frostbitten and dangerously chilled.

We will open. MCPS expects families to get their act together during the winter season. It is not MCPS' responsibility to make sure your kid has a coat.

And duh - kids don't show up to school with coats if it's not freezing! My daughter and a whole lot of other tween and teens seem to think it a badge of honor to show up at school in the flimsiest outfits known to humanity. I see the boys walking about in shorts and t-shirts. At least DD wears leggings.

Leggings! Wow that's definitely t/w/een winter approved. Shorts is more common, a hoddie in weather like this week's.

Two posters who can’t differentiate between middle class kids who want to look cool and poor kids who don’t have a choice.

They will probably open on time

How many of you have a MS student who walks a mile to school?

"frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes and/or hypothermia."

Why do they say this?

Every online resource I've seen says 0F for 30minute frostbite.

Outside shoveling snow for an hour on past 2 days, nowhere close to frostbite on exposed skin (of which I had very little because I am not a fool).

A winter coat, hat, and gloves... That's not cold enough to need anything special. Work with your PTA if you don't think your elementary school has some of those to distribute to kids in need. In a climate that experiences winter, it is reasonable to expect kids to have those for the purpose of opening school.

Not in this weather!

Only allowed to walk half a mile to the snow hill to play for 2 hours.

Just here to say that teens don’t want to bring/wear coats because they no longer utilize lockers. They are uncool for some reason- with a few exceptions, mostly athletes storing gear- so the kids have to lug their coats around to classes.

It shouldn't warrant school closures, but it will probably be the excuse.

Think how much energy those little ones will have built up only to be cooped up at home, school and possibly again this upcoming weekend.

? Snow is when I see the most kids outside playing, PP.

Ironic, isn't it?
