January 2025 - what are you reading?

I just finished sandwich and really liked it. I have a feeling it’s polarizing (haven’t read reviews), but it really resonated with me.

I’ve started Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, which I like so far. But my god I wish she made more paragraph breaks. I like her writing style, but the wall of text is hard for my attention span.

I’m reading Lev Grossman’s “The Bright Sword,” which is great.

Babel, by R.F. Kuang

I know it came out a few years ago, but I just got to it, and so glad I did. It's fabulous.

I was curious about this book for my 16 year old son who likes fantasy. Do you think it would work for a teen who's a strong, experienced reader?

I read Wedding People last week based on recommendations here and it was okay. I didn't love it. I wouldn't recommend it to others.

I'm reading The Frozen River now and I think my opinion will firm up based on the second half. So far the main character has a lot of major stuff going on (I won't spoil here), but she seems totally calm and is just going about her daily life. That doesn't strike me as realistic as all. Everyone is being too even keeled given the circumstances. Dead body? ::shrug::

Same. I read Year of Wonders too based on someone else in the Dec thread liking it which was also good.

Yes, definitely.

Has he read any of the Magicians trilogy by the same author? If not, I think he’d like them as well.

I'm reading The Ministry of Time and am LOVING it. I got to about 2/3 in and realized I didn't want it to end, so I started back at the beginning again LOL.

I just finished listening to "Annie Bot".
It is about a sex robot named Annie. She looks like a real person. She is programmed to slowly learn to be more human. Her owner, Doug, is sometimes happy with her and sometimes he is mean to her, which leaves her confused. Her only goal is to please her man, which is impossible.
I thought it was good. Weird. Way more sci-fi ish than what I usually read.
Downloaded it from Libby.

Aww… this is always how I feel when I love a book. You may have just “given me permission” to start again the next time I’m despairing about how the end is growing near!

Completely not my usual “style” of book, but I really enjoyed Freezing Order, by Bill Browder. Real story of financier who has been battling Putin/Russia—but in the financial sphere—ever since a Russian lawyer (of his company) was murdered in a Moscow jail for political reasons. I was interested in the general subject matter—and the thriller style of the book was a very painless way to learn about about the politics/economics that was the backdrop of the story.

Now starting The Latecomer (a few years old)

I really liked The Latecomer, quirky characters and the story took enough twists and turns to make it interesting.

Currently reading The Big Red by Louise Erdrich. It took a minute, but but I'm now caught up in the storytelling and the lives of all these North Dakota folks in 2008.

Thank you! He hasn't read the Magicians trilogy.
