At School, When Do You Think Is the Appropriate Age to Discuss Same Sex Relationships With Children

Anonymous
We have same sex partners in our neighborhood, so this is an easy thing to discuss. It had never occurred to my kids they were the same sex until I pointed it out. It just WAS. The 2 moms next door just lived there.

Kids do not over think these things like adults do.

DS has known about same sex relationships for as long as he's known about what relationships and families are. I don't remember what age that was but 3ish maybe? I know in his preschool some of their books about families had same sex families, single parent families, etc and I had no issues with that.

+1 DD came home from PK3 and said "did you know some kids have 2 mommies??" and I said yep! Then she asked how she could get that setup so we talked a bit about how families come together.

Nobody was diagramming sex for the kids, homo- or heterosexual. It's just observing the reality of the world around them and I don't understand why people are still alarmist about it.

“You can marry whoever you love. Some girls marry boys, and some girls marry girls.”

Marriage was created by God to join a woman and a man together in a holy covenant with God.
In our country, and in many other countries, men can choose to marry men and women can choose to marry women. It might be confusing that it’s called the same thing. But that’s because there are rights that the government gives to “married” couples—and same-sex couples wanted those rights too. And that makes sense. In 2015, the Supreme Court agreed that this was fair, so now couples who are not/boy or girk/girl can be joined together in marriage too. It isn’t the same as Biblical marriage, because it doesn’t require a covenant with God. But it’s still the fair law and the fair thing to do.

Marriage predates the Bible by quite a stretch of time.

"Uncle Jerry is bringing his friend Bob to Thanksgiving."
What is there to teach?

What age do you start discussing opposite sex relationships? Age 6mon? "Oh look at little timmy, he's such a flirt with little larla!"

There should be no issue discussing same sex relationships from a very early age.

That is the opposite. That is brushing their relationship under the rug and trying to hide them in the closet.

That's not what anyone is talking about. Where did you even come up with this?

Are you confused? We instill hetero norms from literal baby-hood. Discussing same sex relationships is a no brainer at a young age.

DP here but it's because people sexualize babies from the jump (daddy's gonna need a gun! mommy's little heartbreaker!) but god forbid someone mentions anything gay to a kid and all hell breaks loose.

I agree. And don't even get me started on all of the sports shit on onesies. I had a son and it was a nightmare finding something that didn't have football or baseball on it.

Peppa pig has a same sex parent family (the polar bears) so if you’re kids are old enough to watch peppa pig they’re old enough to learn that families all look different and some families have two mamas.

3 or 4 years old? Whenever they realize that adults have relationships at all and first ask about marriage or dates or anything similar.

If Jerry and Bob are dating, why would you call them friends?

We've talked about this with our kids since they were preschoolers. We also had gay neighbors and one of them has a friend with two moms. It's not something we have to bring up, it just is a thing that exists, like opposite sex couples.

Many teachers have their wedding photos in their class and they also refer to their spouse. So- most kids already know this.
