15yo DS puts duct tape over mouth before sleeping

This didn’t work for me. It would slip off during the night.
Nothing wrong with tape just not duct tape!

OP, buy him a box of Breathe Right nose strips. It will increase his breathing in/out of his nose without closing the mouth. Those have been around a long time and are not a fad.

Nowhere near as effective as something like Hostage tape

Is this a new tikTok thing?

Should I be concerned ? Tell him he can't do this?

If he gets a stuffy nose during the night he can die in his sleep.

If he has to sneeze during his sleep (extremely unlikely) he will be forced to sneeze through the nose and he could rupture a brain blood vessel.

Do you have any evidence for these claims?

Yeah, I found the velcro thingy more intrusive than the actual CPAP mask, but just wanted to mention it. I was fairly amazed that on my second night with a CPAP and nasal-only mask I switched from mouth breathing to nose breathing. It can be done!

Why don’t you try it? Get some duct tape over your mouth when you have a stuffy nose and sleep on it!

They don't work. No matter how tight you make them, your mouth will open at night.

Your body would wake you up when it felt like it wasn't breathing well.

This. Those of us with sleep apnea know all of this. Many people use tape with nasal only cpap masks because full face masks are harder to fit and seem more prone to leaking.

Mouth taping has fixed that and supposedly body regulates o2/co2.nitrogen ratio in order to keep nasal passages de-congested. I was concerned beforehand about nose getting congested, but it has actually become better. Supposedly I do not snore anymore either.

Yes, the body won't let you die from lack of oxygen without a fight. It would wake you up. So many people have undiagnosed sleep apnea because sleep studies are so unpleasant and expensive. It occurs naturally as we age as our muscles etc don't stay as tight. This is why losing weight won't cure sleep apnea. If you suspect you have apnea one cheaper way to test things is to buy a recording oxygen monitor. You can buy cheap ones on Amazon. I bought a ring that was better quality. They record your oxygen saturation while you wear the sensor on your finger. Wear it overnight and then look at the data in the morning. If you have several sessions of oxygen desaturation, I would get a sleep study done.

The head gear can't stop mouth breathing. You only have to part your lips the smallest amount while sleeping to mouth breathe.

You are wrong. He will not die in his sleep if he gets a stuffy nose. People do not quietly suffocate in their sleep. People who die "quietly" in their sleep usually have heart problems often caused by untreated apnea. Read the other posts and maybe go spend some time reading on a sleep apnea forum and learn something before you come here with this ignorance. He is not going to rupture a blood vessel sneezing.

NP. Go away ignoramus. Your body does not let you suffocate under these conditions. The person would wake up.

I came here to say this. Fascinating book.

As a mouth breather who tapes, my dentist has noticed an improvement in my gum health. My breath is also better. I rarely snore. And my sleep is measurably better. It’s not a dum TikTok thing.

Don’t use duct tap. - ugh! And be sure to fold the tape over on one side so you can get it off quickly if you feel you need to. This is important.
