That's a substantive response? No wonder discourse around politics so often seems like it is between kindergartners.

Maher talks like a kindergartner. He is not a serious source of information about almost anything, let alone the complexities of one of the most complex and controversial conflicts in recent history.

He's addressing Gen Z. Let's be honest, you need to dumb it down for that generation.

I just had my 16 yr old watch it, and told them that Maher glosses over a lot of atrocities committed by Israel, but that what he said about Hamas, ISIS, and the like is true. It's good to support the people, and especially women, in those countries but not the regimes.

BTW, my 16 yr old said that Gen Z does indeed get their news from tiktok. And she said that she has opinions but she doesn't voice them in school because she's afraid of being yelled at by both sides. She thinks both sides are wrong and feels for the people, but I guess extremists on both sides don't want to hear that.

When my DC was 18 he complained that all the kids regurgitated their parents’ talking points. You’re a case in point: That you bash GenZ and then have to explain a video to your teen to tell her what to think. Don’t you remember being anti-war a young adult (depending on how old you were)? Remember the hippies protesting Vietnam?

DP

But the hippies weren’t being manipulated by TikTok.

How much time do you spend on TikTok? If you have a teen, go scroll through it with them to see what pops up. The political stuff seeps in and it’s very manipulative and almost always factually inaccurate.

Enough generalizations. give us an example of TikTok having manipulated information regarding what Israel is doing. You mean Palestinians themselves showing you or is it the IDF soldiers who proudly display their depravity? Tell us what is being manipulated. The manipulation is on CNN, it’s the New York Times, it’s president of the United States, it’s all the sources who told you about beheaded babies and mass rape, which you conveniently ignore being “mislead” about.

So which sources are the best?

Thoughts on BBC?

The BBC is part of the problem. Even their wording when it comes to Israelis versus Palestinian and Lebanese deaths. I don’t get people ridiculing social media when that’s where these manipulations in traditional media are exposed. It’s not conspiracy. It’s very deliberate on the part of traditional media to manipulate their viewers and readers. Some on here really need to stop being so snide and condescending in thinking that TikTok is just videos of kids dancing around. The people on here are the ones who’ve been manipulated for years by traditional media. They are what got us into wars based on lies. They are the ones who allow govt officials to lie with impunity and have it go unchallenged. It’s traditional media that has lost credibility, because people on social media point out the gaping holes and how they cover news. just because many on here are arrogant and ignorant, don’t push Bill Maher on those of us who can see his agenda and his cowardice for years now.

Are you saying the algorithms on X, FB, IG, Apple News, etc. aren’t funneling adults’ news? Isn’t that also manipulation? Maybe you should watch The Social Dilemma. I did with our then teens.

Maher is clear in his view that any religious extremism is dangerous. I agree. YMMV.

When you watch your precious traditional media bring on people like Bill Barr or Bill Kristal or David Frum or Cheney or John Bolton, as if they haven’t contributed to the demise of this nation and instead, get treated like elder statesman, you don’t get to comment on social media as if it were a joke. Social media is where those men are called out for the warmongers, criminals and liars they are. Trump is a “thing “specifically because traditional media gave him a platform. So where do you get off acting like you’re the ones so well-informed on issues when you’re sitting there watching criminals get sanitized on CNN for your enjoyment?

Yup. To give example that isn’t as charged people decried #freebritney, but they were right. These young people exposed so many connections between judges and lawyers and examined court documents to piece together an unjust situation (without remuneration) that traditional media was unwilling to do. Instead, they were very patriarchal—her father knows best.

Oh, please. He only attacks the Jews who actually don’t believe Israel is supposed to even exist, because they actually follow the Torah. He’s a garbage person who hides behind his supposed atheism, yet it’s funny how rabid he is in Zionism. Stop pretending he doesn’t specifically attack Muslims more than any other religious group and without the guts to actually debate one on his views of Islam or Palestine or Arabs or the Middle East. He was better off making playmates uncomfortable at the playboy mansion.

OP, you’re absolutely pathetic using this coward and his garbage, knowing full-well he refuses to debate anyone. Literally will not invite ANYONE…for YEARS to debate. Lol, Bret Stephens, Bari Weiss every five minutes, Douglas Murray (who no one knew yet I knew Maher would have him on the moment he found himself another putrid Zionist) , etc etc etc. Not a single Pro-Palestinian to debate. Not. One.

You think no one notices?

Ever watch Piers Morgan’s show? He brings on both sides and they shout at each other. I find it fascinating and disturbing…some of what is said is really unhinged, but at least he’s giving both sides a platform and he attempts to foster dialogue.

Anyway, tell me who to watch and read. Tell me who presents the most unbiased take on the dumpster fire. I suspect you’ll suggest sources I’m already following. Let’s see.

The quest for "unbiased" news is a fool's errand. There are biases built into every level of news reporting from the stories that are chosen to be covered, to the slant of the coverage itself, and even in the headline selection. It is better to simply know the bias ahead of time.

Here are some X/Twitter sources that provide factual, if biased, information about Israel and Palestine:

@ntarnopolsky - She is an Israeli reporter.
@DropSiteNews - this is a new news organization that has a reporter in Gaza.
@asadabukhalil - a college professor of Lebanese origin who is also very leftest and basically opposes everyone but generally has accurage news.

One thing to keep in mind about Middle East news — and this is a point often made by Asad Abu Khalil (the third of my recommendations) is that the Western media generally puts a pro-Western spin on things. However, the Middle Eastern media often does the same because it is largely funded by Gulf states who are pro-US. Al-Jazeera is probably the best of the bunch, but it's funded by the government of Qatar and still gets its strings pulled. What's left are generally poorly-funded news sources who lack the resources needed for comprehensive coverage.

Thanks for taking the time to make suggestions, Jeff. I am familiar with some but not all of your sources, and I’ll check them out. I really do follow an intentionally diverse range of outlets and individuals, and I’m fully aware that bias and spin exist everywhere.

I will gently push back on Al Jazeera. They most definitely are controlled by Qataris with an agenda. Qatari money is quietly pulling strings in many sectors and many countries around the world, and the news platform plays a crucial role. Nonetheless, I read what they produce and I don’t immediately dismiss what is being said. I doubt many posters can say that they bother to read content from outlets they disagree with…which speaks volumes about how tribal everything is.

You mean that woman with the flower in her hair who gets paid by pro-Israel groups? You really are just completely shallow in your knowledge of what goes on in the Middle East. Completely shallow. You think everyone in the Middle East is all covered up? you people don’t even know the difference between Saudi Arabia and the Levant. You embarrass yourselves when you say things like this. You genuinely and legitimately show how provincial you are on this topic, and that’s why he won’t allow an actual debate. he brings on someone like her to keep people like you ignorant and clinging to tiresome tropes about Muslims. Way to go on proven my point about him. An echo chamber of anti-Muslim, Zionist crap.

Words from my 16 yr old - "my peers are such idiots."

They can think for themselves, and we often argue about current events. They do not regurgitate everything we say. Teens aren't like that. Rather the opposite. DC said they stay away from the political side of social media.

I also do attempt to see both sides.
