This is a girl who literally got her start because of exactly how poignantly she described teenage crushes (on a boy). She has had a long and famous string of hetero relationships not just with out and public people that seemed cheesy (TOM HIDDLESTON) but also people who clearly wanted it to be under the radar (Alwyn) and others who were complete garbage choices that ONLY a heterosexual woman would talk herself into giving a change (Mayer/Matt what's his face from the 1975).
It is actually like, disrespectful at this point? I don't know how to describe it but it gets jerky when you do it to a guy, speculate on his sexuality based on a collection of weird things over the years. It is also weird to do it to her, especially when there is like, NO evidence except your elaborate fantasies.
It's so disrespectful. The underlying implication is that it's wrong to be gay, therefore, you must keep it under wraps. That her/his fanbase couldn't "handle" it, so this contractual ruse of a relationship is needed. It's unbelievably rude and disrespectful on all of those levels. These people perpetuating it are horrible, regardless of who they are talking about.
I don't buy this theory but I find it neither disrespectful nor homophobic.
The people who espouse this theory generally don't think being gay is bad -- they think OTHER people think being gay is bad and this is why Taylor isn't out. I have a friend who dearly believes this theory and is an out and proud gay person. Believing this feels good to my friend because they love Taylor and this theory makes them feel like they have this secret in common.
And while sometimes the intense fixation on Taylor's relationships is definitely disrespectful or misogynist, not always. So many of her fans are intensely invested in Taylor's live life and she has encouraged that interest throughout her career with the Easter eggs and the way she brings her relationships into her work. I think it's hard to be disrespectful when you are doing something a celeb actively encourages. It might not be healthy (I don't think it is) but it's not disrespectful.
