What does I don't "really" drink mean (to you)?

Anonymous
I would say that because "I don't drink" would be a lie since I sometimes drink. I'll drink for holidays if we have family over, maybe if we go out to a nice restaurant but that is rare, a couple times a year. And it's always just one glass because I get headaches.

People that don't really drink don't like how they feel when they drink.

People that really drink are alcoholics. They drink and get hammered.

It means “I will not be drinking now, thanks anyway.”

It is great that he was teaching that kid that not all celebrations need to center around alcohol!

I would put myself in the “don’t really drink” category. For me - I’m not a teetotaler, but the most I’ll drink is a glass of wine or a beer with a meal, maybe once a month or so.

I don’t drink alcohol and that’s how I say it too. I guess I say it that way because in my mind, I do drink but something else, like club soda. What I don’t really drink is alcohol.

I don't care if you don't drink alcohol, but drinking Gatorade Zero is disgusting. The entire point of gatorade is sugar and salt. Putting fake sugar in there takes away 50% of the benefit.

Same, if that. I don’t want to say I don’t drink because as someone may see me with a drink sometimes and either think I fell off the wagon or lied. I am from a family of alcoholics fwiw

My spouse is in the doesn’t really drink category. He doesn’t ever drink beer or wine. He will occasionally have a cocktail, mostly if it’s a social occasion and it feels weird not to drink anything, or sometimes out to dinner. It’s probably in the single digits in an entire year.

I sometimes say that. Usually I would just say no thank you but I can see how he was asked an awkward question.

I drink maybe 10x per year, maybe 3 times more than one drink? It might be less.

I say this because I rarely drink but do drink occasionally. So I don’t want people to be concerned if they see me with a drink now and then.

I don't really drink since I hit my 50s. Body doesn't really metabolize even in small amount of alcohol like it used to.

Yes, I will have a drink once in awhile at a special occasion, like Christmas or something. But that's it, maybe one drink a month at most.

I don't really drink, and I never have. I will hold a glass and take a sip for a champagne toast a wedding, but don't finish the glass. If we're traveling and the tour involves some version of a local alcohol, I'll taste once to try the flavor, but don't finish the glass. Etc. I've never been drunk or even tipsy. Never consumed a full alcoholic drink. I'll take a single taste sometimes and won't make a scene in social situations like a group toast.

I say “I don’t really drink” because I have no moral issue with it and don’t 100% abstain, but I have 1-2 drinks total a year. I’ve had one glass of wine since last Christmas . So , I’m open to it when I feel like it, but don’t do it commonly. Thus “I don’t really drink.”
