Vienna is so provincial

It is a suburb of a city. The city is there for when people want to go to museums or see a play. Those don’t need to be in every suburb.

Vienna is for snobs and tryhards. Thats why I prefer to live in a trailer park on Richmond Hwy down in Alexandria. It’s actually quite cozy.

That said, I don't get the hate. It has highly ranked schools, new homes, and seems fairly family friendly. Lots of kids, sports, walking trails, and shops nearby. I understand why people move there.

Why so angry, OP? Do you have kids?

Town of Vienna DOES NOT have or run their own schools, unlike Falls Church City. TOV schools are owned and run by Fairfax County Schools. Nothing special there...and your bloated tax dollars send to TOV are NOT funding the schools there.

Despite my objections, my husband convinced me to move to Vienna, and quelle surprise, I really love it (our kids are 9th, 7th, and 4th graders). Our kids have so much freedom to ride their bikes all over town, including to many of their sports practices and school (which makes life easier on us as well!) We love the various town events (also bikeable!). I share the critiques about the restaurant scene (it's really awful, which I don't get!) and little league (both my boys play(ed) and I really dislike the intense parents). I work downtown, and have a really easy commute on the metro (my office is on the orange line so its a straight shot).

My one personal complaint is that my kids are so detached from the fact that we live close to DC; I have to create opportunities for them to go into the city.

You must be confusing the "city" with Reston TC or Mosaic.
The city isn't about doing specific things, cities don't exist to be merely destinations for occasional fine dining or a cultural institution visit. It's a place where many people live, work, entertain, exercise, socialize, shop, and even raise kids.

At the risk of outing myself with identifiable information, both DH and I are children of DC natives who worked incredibly hard to escape poverty and their miserable lives of city living. Moving to the suburbs was part of their American Dream so by coincidence, settled in Fairfax County to give us the
clean, comfortable and safe childhoods they didn’t have.

We rarely ventured into DC except for school field trips, July 4th (Beach Boys on the Mall) and maybe for some happy hours or perhaps to meet up with visiting friends. It simply was unsafe to drive through my parent’s old neighborhood so I saw it exactly once.

I’ll stay in my quiet suburb, thanks and still avoid DC at all costs. It’s unsafe.

Yes, but they couldn't even get Taylor Swift to perform.

Not always true. I live in Arlington and do my best not to be cultured.

You can’t escape your true nature. Embrace fancy patisseries and intellectual conversation with other influential people in DC. Vienna people only talk about the new restaurant opening or “the big game coming up”

Now I know you're a troll or a rube. The pastry scene in Arlington, or even DC in general, is an embarrassment. Go get a kouign amann at your closest Tatte and tell me I'm wrong (and if you don't have one nearby just wait a week, I'm sure they're building one).

I admit im not from Arlington, but from gasp Montgomery county. I’ve been caught. I do like Tatte, no shame

Gah, now I have to order the bowl with quinoa, persimmons, and short rib.

Is that suppose to be a bad thing?

Haha haters...we all love it.

I lived there for years. Definitely did not love it.

I was there recently and liked it. Where else can you have a horse in your front yard and be in close proximity to a musical venue and so many bakeries, restaurants, and shops?

Priced out and angry about it

No one said they ran their own schools, only that they are well-regarded. OP, what's wrong? Priced out?

Vienna is great. I don’t live there and never have. I don’t understand the petty bs from this board.
