Vienna is so provincial

We lived there for quite a while. It's fine, but it is "provincial" in the sense that people make a conscious effort to be superficial and focus their attention on suburban activities like youth sports, the Madison band, and scouting. It's the type of place where it's bad form if you express your political views openly, but it's absolutely fine if parents ostracize other families whose kids aren't especially athletic. I was happy to leave.

It was named the #1 city several years ago.

So what, that’s what many Americans want out of life. A job, a family, a decent neighborhood. The only problem I see is that it’s way overpriced for what it is.

You say that like it’s a problem.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s Vienna, VA, a very definition of suburban provincial

Isn't Vienna part of Fairfax County? Why is their taxes be any higher?

We pay extra taxes to the town within TOV. Worth every cent based on snow removal and leaf collection alone. Pays for our trash--and they take almost everything, which is great! Also gives you discounted rates for community center camps/lessons, which we used heavily when my kids were young.

It also has its own police department and as such, there is basically no crime (response time for police is 1-2 minutes in an emergency)

I don't live in Vienna and have no intention of ever doing so. Not my cup of tea.

That said, I don't get the hate. It has highly ranked schools, new homes, and seems fairly family friendly. Lots of kids, sports, walking trails, and shops nearby. I understand why people move there.

Why so angry, OP? Do you have kids?

This whole thread sounds like when Simpsons characters would talk about Shelbyville.

They're not wrong though. Arlington's football teams sucks - that's why we beat them nearly half the time!

It's the suburbs. Of course it is provincial.

Not sure why you have to be posting on here in such a bitter way about something that is on the level of water-is-wet.

OMG. It's exhausting. I feel like I've seen 500 photos pushing that damn Carnegie Diner that isn't that great. And that weird #doyoubelieve I do!!! hashtag thing? It's like people from a cult are posting or something.

The problem is not presence of these amenities parents seek, but the absence of pretty much anything else.

Suburbs are designed to focus on providing family sized housing with outdoor space, school access, feeling of safety, convenient access to basic shopping and dining needs and other necessities of life, some paths for people to walk around, so that they don't feel entirely cooped up and that's about it? If this is all you need to be happy and you do not desire any sort of other complexity then nothing is wrong here.
