Ever have dinner at a restaurant by yourself?

One's own company is "awkward and sad"?
Wow. Insecure much?

Yes. Sushi sounds perfect right now. Hope it was good.

Table for one or eating at the bar by yourself and scrolling on your phone or pretending to care about the sports match on the TV (if they have a TV) is embarrassing. Just get it to-go and save yourself the embarrassment.

Who pissed in your soup?

Often. Usually I choose the bar.

Truth hurts, loner.

Next week I will be in Japan and will eat alone in a different restaurant twice a day for the entire week.

Japan is great for single diners. So many office workers who work late and eat on the way home. Totally normal there.

Insecurity in being alone is utterly pathetic. Grow up and stop being scared.

And in S Korea you would be seen as a weird outcast for dining alone! I would think norms would be more similar in two East Asian countries in such proximity, but I guess not.

No. I'd bring a book.

In Japan, single *male* diners are very common. Females, less so.

You can eat there without drinking.

Sometimes people bug you at the bar and it can be awkward to be crammed in next to couples. The ideal is a table, or the bar at an off time (like 5pm).

I once dressed in formal evening gown to attend an opera at the Met in New York. I splurged on a box seat all by myself. I had just had a broken engagement and this made me feel absolutely wonderful and I knew that I would be fine land on my feet!

Good for you PP!!! I celebrated the end of my divorce trial by having lunch solo where I ordered a huge rare steak which was so satisfying to cut up with that huge knife. lol
The waiter threw in complimentary champagne and desert that said congratulations. Great lunch!!!

I love both these stories!

When you travel for work, you may often eat alone at a restaurant. Just take a book or newspaper. It can be relaxing.

You’re a sad, strange little man.

Of course! I recommend you try having a long lunch yourself, and then try dinner at a quiet restaurant bar. I’ve dined solo and even as a shy young woman traveled alone in Europe midway through college and always ate out alone.
