As in if you want to attend, apply in August. Definitely do not wait until Nov 1 for EA

Really? I have never heard this before. So applying in September or early October really makes a difference?

NP. I think in a way it displays demonstrated and the application gets an early read (just my guess) before the flood of applications in November.

Returning to this thread to help those applying this fall.

I definitely think it helps to get the Michigan application in before October 15 - preferably by the end of September.

My kid submitted the application by October 10 and was admitted in early action. Was also not the very tippy top of the class either. Had very, very good Michigan essays that they spent a good portion of August on.

Here is something I saw today on a Michigan admissions Facebook group:

“I recently had my daughter and some of her friends make the appointment at Umich to read their application feedback, as they just completed freshmen year. It was very helpful to see it through the lens of the people reading it. One thing she noticed is that both reviewers made a note about her application being reviewed prior to the deadline (and they indicated the date on which they reviewed it in October).”

But they may note date application was reviewed on every file.

My DD submitted her app on November 1 and was accepted. Much better to wait and polish essays than submit too soon. Just one opinion.

This was the case for our DC who submitted by October 1 for EA. Was deferred but admitted 3 weeks later in a batch of mostly instate applicants (we are OOS). I think they wanted to see DC's mid-year grades.

I have heard from many folks in the consulting community and in the university itself that earlier is better, particularly since the number of applicants now exceeds 100,000.

DC is graduating this weekend from LSA Econ and has a job in DC with a consultancy. Not everyone can say that these days, so we are grateful.

My DC submitted mid-October. They did get in EA, but I don't think that was a factor. I'm sure they will request the file review, so we'll see at some point. What we were told, and what we think was right, was that the big essay is very important. DC put more care into that essay than any other. They do want to know that you want them, especially if you are out of state. We never visited before DC applied b/c it has such low acceptance numbers, but DC did sign up for the school visit and attended a virtual session. We are so excited for this fall. Go Blue!

What else does Michigan focus on in app review?

Are apps reviewed in the order received?

Major?

I have no insight - just an observation that there are FIVE kids from DC's graduating class (FCPS) going to Michigan this year. I remember maybe one or two in prior years. Are other area schools seeing this? A lot to Georgia Tech, also. Many fewer to UVA.

My DC was accepted RD after an EA deferral to Engineering. They had visited, but did not do a formal tour so I don’t think Michigan knew they came (visited cousin for the weekend). They reached out to the engineering department they were interested in and were able to have a call with a current senior about the program, internships, and job placement in the field. They used those experiences in their why Michigan essay.
When they were deferred (OOS), they wrote the LOCI making it clear Michigan was their top choice and they’d attend if accepted. Submitted grades with straight A’s.

25% of my kids OOS (non-DMV) private school class was accepted. Shockingly high this year.
They need full pay OOS given funding cuts.

Any local DMV kids get into Ross this cycle? Wondering if it was harder or easier now that they switched to direct admit (no LSA).

Our DC private had 30 kids apply and they took 3 and all had SAT above 1580 or ACT 36.

They did not seem to care about rigor: kids with higher rigor but a lower SAT (1530s, etc) were waitlisted.

This is for Michigan in general, not Ross.

Son got waitlisted. I'm not surprised, nor complaining, just here to show you that even kids who have strong credentials may not draw a lucky card. Got in UVA, UCLA and Georgetown.

Val, rank 1/600, about a 4.7 michigan gpa due to all As and 13 APs. Biology. Had APs in Chem, Physics and Bio. 5s on 5 AP tests and 1 4 going into admissions round. Really strong essays and very michigan specific. OOS. Maybe problem for him was 1500 SAT? If it had been 1540, would that have helped?

Was not his first choice anyway, so it's all good. Gorgeous school, we were enchanted. Go Blue!

At our high ranking FCPS high school, the two kids I know who got in both had the necessary high stats and class rank but also one was an athlete and a legacy and the other proudly lied about his awards and ECs (his dad thought it was funny - great catch, Michigan)

Michigan absolutely went for tippy top test scores above all else from SOME out-of-state kids.
The DC kids i know who were admitted had very high scores: 1600, 1590, 36.
The rest were waitlisted except for several to the school of Architecture who did not submit scores at all.
My child was admitted to UNC, UVA, Berkeley and 2 top20 privates but not Michigan. SAT of 1540.
Interestingly, the Michigan admits with the high scores that I referred to above were waitlisted or denied at several of these other state schools and the top20 privates.

where is your kid going? Mine is still deciding between 2 of these 3. 11th hour panic is setting in and he is no closer to a decision.

Interesting. Do you mean submitting application early including counselor letter and teacher LORs? Unfortunately at my kids large public school, teachers and counselors tend to submit LOR at the very last minute.
