why is MoCo so dumpy now?

To be clear, a poster who says stuff like "But yeah MoCo and PG look like a third world country at this stage of the game, minus Bethesda and Potomac and CC." isn't actually talking about areas, they're talking about the people who live in those areas. I think it's a win for Montgomery County if posters who say stuff like this don't live in Montgomery County.

I live in Bethesda and would never live in any other part of Montgomery other than Bethesda or Potomac.

I treat the entire rest of the county aside from Bethesda, Potomac and the commercial strip along the pike up to Gude as a giant no-go zone. Like when you travel to a all-inclusive resort and are cautioned not to leave the compound? That is exactly how I see Bethesda/Potomac. They’re the compound. Do not leave the compound.

You need to get out more often. Upcounty, particularly where teh Ag Reserve is located, is lovely.

MDSHA is not dumping things on 495, the people that live there are. And that never used to happen.

The culture and pride of being in MoCo is dying with the changes in who is moving there. It is a slow and ugly, but very predictable decline.

Nobody lives on 495. It's a limited-access highway. Where are you posting from?

I live in Bethesda and am slightly biased but it’s stilly to say that places like Darnestown, Olney, parts of Poolesville aren’t nice. There are beautiful neighborhoods there. Sure, Wheaton, Takoma, the city of Gaithersburg, Germanton are kind of dumps.

I personally think most of northern VA is a dump outside North Arlington, parts of McLean/Langley, Great Falls and downtown Falls church. Most other areas are strip malls and chain restaurants

Sorry but Arlington is ugly and a dump. It may have expensive homes but it's an ugly, dreadful place.

So if you stay away, you'll be happy, and we'll be happy, win-win.

So much arrogrant racism and classism in this thread. And I have to wonder with some of it how long *your* families have actually lived in the US.

It seems like we're converging on the standard being -- where are places where people generally behave well and where there are fewer homeless/panhandlers/low-class people.

And that's how we know OP is a NoVA troll -- because if that's the concern, then there are nice places in MoCo and nice places in NoVA, and there are not-so-nice places in both. But acting as though one place is uniformly nice and the other isn't is stupid and classic troll behavior.

Poster says; “Olney is nice”

(Looks at thread about shooting behind Olney Harris Teeter)

I think the correct thing to say is Olney WAS nice. (Which, it was, but now there’s panhandlers on the major streets and plazas.) we were considering buying a house there but with the way MoCo politics are, it’ll likely just go further downhill. Which is sad.

Also to the PPs boasting about how awesome and well educated MoCo is - yeah, that’s because bunches of government scientists and workers are crammed into Bethesda/Potomac/North Potomac/CC and parts of Rockville. They’re tipping the scale. Without them MoCo would be serious dumps, and currently as other PPs pointed out, the areas I listed above are the only decent ones left.

How is pointing out how much trash is thrown on the street or in parks racist and classist? I'm sorry, but I have absolutely zero respect for anyone who liters and/or dumps. They are the lowest of the low scum on the planet.

One of the weird things about this entire area is when you complain about general poor behavior, people assume you are talking about POC and then justify that behavior.

Here's a helpful guide.

Not racist or classist: Littering is bad.
Not racist or classist: I don't like to see litter.
Not racist or classist: I don't like people who litter.
Not racist or classist: I see a lot of litter in [place].
Racist or classist: [Areas where poor and/or non-white people live] are dumps.

Agree but much of NoVa and MC are moving in opposite directions. NoVa is booming, with Tysons the central business district in the DMV.

Except there is tons of more litter in Silver Spring, Takoma, Wheaton, etc. I’m sorry your fragile little mind can’t handle it.

I had to drive around that area today and was getting off the Wheaton exit from 495. So. Much. Trash. Everywhere. You wouldn’t see people littering like that in Olney, or on the roads in Chevy Chase or even in many parts of Gaithersburg. There are just more lowlife littering low class aholes in the eastern part of the county.

Like what goes through peoples’ minds who have a pickup truck with a couch and desk they want to get rid of and they decide to dump it on the side of the road in silver spring? Just loser mindset and behavior. They are just mentally broken people who are irredeemable, because they’ve never been taught manners and about living in a community from good parents.

NP - You can't deny that people who grew up in third world countries have different expectations for behavior. Parts of MoCo are 30%+ foreign born (and that, of course, doesn't include their U.S. born children. We are overwhelmed and can't acculturate people fast enough, so yes, things are starting to appear more and more like the third world. Is that racist?
