The Hayfield principal is heavily involved with the football team. He has told staff to stop gossiping or else. It’s currently so toxic at Hayfield.

Off topic, but what else is making the situation at Hayfield toxic other than the football situation?

Former Hayfield staff member here- none of this surprises me. The school has had a history of sketchy hiring and situations. Ever since David Tremaine passed away in 2014, Hayfield has gone down in leadership and school culture. It seems like Region 3 (in the past) and 6 hires whoever to be at the school to have a body in the room and recently a body to warm the principal seat. Hayfield admin in general has been known to cultivate toxic work environments and situations (passive aggressiveness, passive retaliations, etc.) There is no discipline or consequences for negative student behavior. Admin there tends to focus on staff social matters, like the "gossiping issue". The fact that Hayfield admin has said that "gossiping" would be addressed in staff evaluations if they find a staff member
"gossiping" is everything you need to know about how toxic the school has gotten. Why does admin need to focus on this when there are serious issues at hand? If you ask me, it looks like Hayfield admin is trying to use communist-style methods to cover up something big.

Hayfield is like a little bit of MCPS in Fairfax.

Not necessary. I’ve had students where the families rent an apartment where they claim as their main residence for school residency and they supposedly stay during the week with one parent. Not hayfield but another school. Everyone knows they don’t actually live there even through they rent the apartment. - teacher

+1 Another teacher here. Yes, I knew a couple of students where the parents owned a rental property in the district and they claimed it as the residence (but the rental was being leased by a teacher at the school). The principal was a "friend". I'm sure they made sure a utility bill came to the property with their name on it.

All you need is a deed. We lived in a community where both the owner (landlord) and renter had children enrolled at Woodson, using the same address.

Yup this is happening at every high school in FCPS!!! Our neighbors do it.

This whole county is sketchy and no admin is here for the kids...unless maybe they benefit their precious sports programs. Academics and good students be damned.

When there are thousands of failing students, FCPS shouldn't be paying for any kids to play games regardless of where they live.

Allegedly.

Truth. I will second the principal's message about no gossiping.

Oh, it’s definitely truth. The allegedly was added to avoid any possibility of a lawsuit.

When did FCPS’ liberal policy of open enrollment for high school students begin? It certainly wasn’t like that for most of us who grew up in the area. You had no go to your assigned high school. And all the schools had the same regular, honors, foreign and classical language, and AP classes.

I was shocked to read in the Fairfax Times (re the coach and football team mom controversy) that Prince William has a more liberal than FCPS open enrollment policy for its high schools. That’s nuts. How do school districts do any demographic planning or population control. These transfer policies only create popular schools that are ridiculously overcrowded with the best sports teams and academic superstars and schools that families avoid with declining population numbers, middling academics, and sports that can’t field teams.

Open enrollment due to homelessness is a federal law. It’s not an FCPS rule. What also leads to overcrowding at Hayfield is the fact that military families can choose to not go to their zoned school and attend Hayfield. I believe that this is also a federal law.

I have a neighbor that works for HSS. This is shared with their permission.

-Threats & intimidation.
-The principal does not speak to staff outside of his inner circle.
-There is no communication.
-There is no community.
-It’s a dictatorship.

It’s probably better for staff that the principal does not care to speak with them. At least the staff won’t go down with the ship.

Any person saying that there aren’t close to 30 students that transferred to HSS for FB is either lying or doesn’t work on the high school side.

The football scandal is the tip of the iceberg. It’s the trouble that can be seen at HSS. The school is losing good teachers to surrounding schools. It’s not because of the students. It’s because of the new administration.

They do residency checks. That’s why the send letters in the mail once or twice a year. Returned mail gets investigated. Schools also make inquiries about residency when there is a concern.

Whenever FCPS says they are conducting a "confidential" thorough investigation...I question all of it. FCPS is out for FCPS-not children not staff sadly. There are major issues throughout this county that would shock us all. We need more whistle blowers.

Kids transfer between schools in the same county often. That’s not the focus here. It’s PWC county coming to Fairfax, and being able to play sports. Out of county kids can pay to come to FCPS - but are not eligible to play.

And the DSS (Director of Student Services) who oversaw registration at Hayfield - allegedly asked to transfer out when she was asked to do things related to registration that she wasn’t willing to do.
