What Are the Tell Tale Signs of 'New Money' People?

Anonymous
This is so weird. Are we really glorifying the days of the gentry that handed down ill gotten fortune to their progeny? While people who come from poor families who worked their way into the UMC are looked down upon? What if I came from a poor background, went to an Ivy, live comfortably, but don’t flaunt wealth. I just think the distinction people should be making is tacky/classless versus not. But being aghast at people who didn’t come “from money” but still have it, probably because they worked for it? Stupid. Is Donald Trump so classy, but Obama (new money!) not? Jeez.

This. Or you'll be talking about something totally unrelated to money/social class and someone will be like "That's SO new money. Old money would NEVER."

Like, no one cares. No one wants to look like your crusty ass horse girl grandma whose family lost all her money in the depression. Grow up.

Donald Trump is the epitome of tacky new money. I think he is the way he is because he's had a huge chip on his shoulder his whole life about it.

So old money wears purses from Walmart?

My parents are rags to riches but do not act New Money. You’re talking about a specific sort of status seekers who are obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses. Not sure why they’re like that. A low self esteem issue perhaps combined with being materialistic.

Eating burgers with their hands.

Letting people unrelated to the family see their polished toenails

A handbag from a boutique or atelier is preferable, unique. Or a vintage designer piece with quality features.
I guess it’s not “old money vs new money”, but rather “trendy tacky vs quiet quality”

So gross.

New vs old doesn’t matter. You need to set your online dating filters for:

Having a Family Office
Private Jet
MOST CRUCIALLY, NO COLORED NAIL POLISH

People are oddly obsessed with old money. That is the “correct” type of money and new money is tacky, gross, and should be ashamed. I have no idea why. Old money, by definition, did nothing for it and often the people are dilettantes, but they drive 20 year old Volvos so it is better. So weird.

What brand handbag is considered old money?

I want Chanel but it might be too new money. What about second hand Chanel that looks old and worn like I inherited it? That might be old money?

Neither new nor old should carry Chanel given her history in WW2.

"Old line people listen more than they talk." & "old $ people are self made" is hilarious. This whole thread is silly but of the old $ ppl I know in my extended family (in laws on 2 diff sides) this is decidedly not the case.

Old money is not self-made. They wouldn’t be old money if they were.
