That's BS. The essay is not just about what you do, but also about why you continue doing what you do and how it defines you as a person. Talk about what you learned from it and how it connects with what you want to do in life. For example, if your kid has played baseball for 9 years and wants to become a data scientist. Talk about your love for the game, why do you love it (team spirit, friendship, leadership, etc.) and what you learned from it. Talk about how playing hte game got you interested in baseball stats and your AP stats and calc classes made you realise you could be the guy behind the stats, hence your desire to study data science in college. Make up the connection. If you hit a wall, ask ChatGPT. |
| Both DCs explained the “why” behind their unusual interests. Without the common app essay explaining what got them interested in something most kids (or even andults) wouldn’t care about, and why they kept going even when it wasn’t easy anchored the rest of their application and explained the zigs and zags in their choice of activities which otherwise would have looked random and unfocused. |
DC in public HS had to do this, too. |
| Mine wrote about the death of her grandmother. |
