Does the HOS at Potomac Really Make This Much??

Anonymous
The HOS is a fundraising job and it’s not easy. Teachers are definitely underpaid but they don’t have to solicit people to raise millions of dollars every single year. If a HoS doesn’t raise money, the school can’t operate and goes out of business. A lot of the schools ability to raise money is based on happy parents and happy alumni. I promise you have no idea how hard the job is and how much it is dependent on achieving clearly defined results. You can’t BS your way through the job.

No one is saying it's not a hard job. Cleaning public bathrooms is a hard job. But just because a job is hard doesn't mean that it justifies the salary.

If there is good college placement, parents will not mind salary. This is why parents are okay with GDS HOS salary. The growth of all these insta pages makes the college placement visually hard to ignore. I know people are counting to see if numbers from senior class posted match. I am not saying I agree with the posting but seems this has become the norm.

I wonder what the average teacher salary is at GDS? I know most schools, including the Big 3, pay relatively new teachers no more than $55k a year.

I agree. Schools should be transparent with their college lists, and not leave it to a semi-official (at best), discretionary social media communication such as Insta. Each year's matriculation list should be posted.

The market justifies the salary. If one school went to their head and declared their salary was being cut by 25-50%, the head would leave and no worthy candidate would touch the job. So it’s not happening. Sports stars and heads of school. And lawyers. And consultatants. And CEO’s. Big salaries. And they’re not coming down anytime soon. Or ever.

Again salary is justified if college placement holds. So many parents watch this and as said earlier the the insta posts are making placement sport for insensitive parents who do not realize how this makes kids feel.

Don't teachers play more of a crucial role in college placement?

Yeah, I had a similar thought, also in government.

The whole thing just sounds like a boondoggle. Parents pay these astronomical sums to these schools in order to get a better quality education, a better experience, better contacts whatever. Then on top of their tuition, they are constantly asked for additional money for the school, plus their children will be hit up for more money for the school for the rest of their lives. Some small fraction of all this money goes to pay teachers, but then you have a HoS making somewhere around 1m per year. And the justification for paying this person this much money is that they need it in order to be good at fundraising, which is the main goal of their job. So they are being paid a lot in order to ask people to give the school more money... so they can be paid a lot.

I know Potomac graduates as well as people from most of the major private schools in the area, and I know these schools generally do an above average job of educating students. But you can't help but look at that system and think about how the education piece is sort of beside the point.
