+1. This poor kid and their poor family. May you vultures never know.

Honest question. Do you not see any value in knowing about this loss so that parents can discuss it with their children? The students are already talking about it. It's well documented that suicide within a community can increase the risk of other suicides, so these events are something a parent, especially a parent of a student who is already struggling with mental health, should be aware of.

Schools notify actual parents of these incidents.

I'm a UMD parent and I was not notified of this event. I heard from my student.

It was mentioned in the parent facebook group. UMD is a large school. I don't know that they need to inform everyone.

If they care, they would inform all parents. If my kid had mental health issues, I would most definately want to know if there was a suicide on campus. That way I could check in with them (more than normal) and make sure I'm aware if it was a friend, an acquaintance or something like that.
Parents deserve to be informed.

Not to be grime or anything but if it IS your child you WILL be notified. This is a private issue for the family - no information except there is no threat to the public needs to be announced.

Disagree If a suicide happens on campus, it will be talked about with the students. They will all find out. If I have a kid with Mental health issues (of any type), I as a parent would like to know so I can take extra care to check in with my kid and ensure it's not affecting them negatively. In the fall, kids saw the suicide and the aftermath as it was near a freshman dorm. That can have devastating effects on anyone, let alone a kid with MH issues.

The issue may be private for the family, so no names need to be provided. But the student body and parents need basic facts. Once someone decides to do this in public means basic information needs to be disseminated to the public. If it were my kid, I would want anything done to ensure it doesn't cause any more devastating issues for other students

My son is a freshman. He claimed that something else occurred today, Thursday? I'm not sure, but he feels that his dorm and the kids in his dorm need some mental health help. They have seen too much. He is requesting more help on behalf of the dorm, but he requested and pushed for help in October too. Something is missing here. He is very upset with umd and the counseling dept today.

You don’t need facts and most mental illnesses happens before college so if it’s happened it you may have missed the signs. Stop being nosy.

UMD is not responsible for mental health. Use your insurance and get your kid help.

No, parents are. It’s their responsibility not the colleges.

It gets the smart kids now . When I was in school, UMD was a party school not known for academic rigor

UMD is still so sports and Greek life based when the majority of the students are Ivy L. quality now. They can’t read the room and change the culture . It’s an extroverted school with more introverted students these days

I have a freshman as well and I saw the death investigation on the news but never heard what happened. Can you share what dorm? I have growing concerns about this school . 😬 Not going to lie.. I tried to talk my son out of UMD in the first place, but this is terrible. I don’t generally check in with my son that much - he’s pretty independent. I would have been checking on him if I was aware of another suicide for sure 😔

NP here, my high school senior is considering UMD honors. Do you mind telling us what your concerns are about the school?

I'm not sure you can isolate UMD as a "problem school". Our nation and our students have mental health issues. I have a hard time believing that UMD is the ONLY school encountering these issues. The school has been actively adding resources and providing support and training.
