Another suicide UMD

Anonymous
My daughter texted me last night that there was another suicide yesterday. She witnessed the suicide last fall as it was right outside her dorm and this one was close by as well. She's been fighting depression so I talked to her last night and she's doing OK but it is so sad that somebody feels that they need to make a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Whatever that kid was going through should not have ended like this.

I’m so sorry for that student’s family and for your daughter as well. I hope she’s also doing OK.

RIP. Prayers to the family.

It's obnoxious and offensive to speculate on what kind of problem this unknown person had.

Where was the speculation?

I’m so sorry.

Please encourage your child to get on a therapy schedule now. That is traumatic.

She witnessed a person unalive themselves? If she wants, i would see if she can do the rest of semester remotely or just pause and come back in the fall. Get her some deep therapy

NP. The OP said that her DD witnessed the incident in the fall when another student jumped from the stadium. It's so sad all around. I'm sending my sympathy to the family on their loss and to all others struggling to process this loss.

I find these threads so inappropriate. Someone lost a child and you all want to gossip about it. Taking on someone else's trauma as your own. Gross. Most blogs block comments on posts reporting suicide.

Op go get some help for you and your kid.

Extremely sad. I have a kid there. They are doing well academically, but I do worry about what if their s/o breaks up with them. They took a breakup so hard in HS.

I have another DC who has anxiety and a bit of depression, now in HS, and I really worry about this DC going off to college. They aren't that strong academically.

Always something to worry about with kids, no matter how old they get.

I think these sad incidents are a reminder to parents to keep in touch with their kids and be aware of any mental health issues.

Honest question. Do you not see any value in knowing about this loss so that parents can discuss it with their children? The students are already talking about it. It's well documented that suicide within a community can increase the risk of other suicides, so these events are something a parent, especially a parent of a student who is already struggling with mental health, should be aware of.

Schools notify actual parents of these incidents.
