St. Elmo’s Fire is a terrible movie with terrible characters

That was a legitimate career option in the 80’s lol

There is a hilarious bit in 30Rock where Tina fry’s character is worried that scripted television is dying and that TV comedy writers will be the next career to disappear. She’s wandering through the streets of Ny and finds this group of people with jobs that used to be a thing, which included a travel agent and the guy who played the saxophone solo in rock songs.

It helps to be shirtless.

PP here and that bit is exactly what I thought of when I read “rock saxophonist” 😂

I loved this movie so much when it came out. I was graduating from high school and just thought it was so profound on how life changes (although I always thought the Jules story was a little dumb).

Went back to the movie theater the next night to see it again.

I've watched bits and pieces over the years when it's been on TV. I can't imagine pulling it up to stream from start to finish. I doubt it holds up, but in my memory it was perfect.

Seriously! SO many hit songs had giant sax solos in them.

Same.

It seems to make bad movies worse when they have a title that has no connection to the movie. It’s like the producer is rolling his eyes & saying “If I have to explain why THAT’S the title, perhaps you should go watch another Rambo movie.”

Yep. +1 They are wearing exactly what was worn a lot then by people in their position.

They were 22.

22.

Yes, 22. Starting careers in the mid 80s in DC.

I went down a rabbit hole. Mare Winningham has been married four times and her most recent (current) husband is Anthony Edwards. I kind of love that.

Wild! I used to have a big crush on him.

Kenny G was huge back then.

This is one of the tragedies of the streaming era - the demise of watching 27 minutes of a movie simply because it's on, and you started in the middle of it.

Demi Moore had a bad drug problem right before they started filming. She was actually fired from the film until she got clean. The director was really pulling for her. That film probably saved her career and life.

I found it strange at the time, that RL and Mare slept together at the end of the film though.

I need to re-watch this film. I don't remember them having sex but the Google tells me it is true.

I remembered the girdle scene, but couldn't remember if they actually did it or not, so just had to youtube it. Watching that scene made me feel like a teen again, wanting to lose my virginity to Rob Lowe. And even now, at 52, I don't care if he was a drunk loser; he was so pretty I'd literally do anything he'd ask.

Kenny G was smooth jazz in the 80s, not rock. But I do miss sax solos!
