St. Elmo’s Fire is a terrible movie with terrible characters

I loved this movie as a young teen and just rewatched it…and boy was it terrible.

All the characters are terrible people. Like, really terrible. No redeeming qualities.

And whoever did costumes for the film really missed the mark for Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham.

OMG I just rewatched this a few weeks ago! Yes, Mare Winningham looks like a 50s librarian and her storyline is terrible. But nothing has aged worse than Emilio Estevez’s stalker plot line, holy crap.

Winningham was pregnant at the time which accounted for some of the bad costume choices but not all.

Nobody in college or their 20s or even 30s dressed like Mare in that movie.

Given that she obviously was from Potomac, they should have dressed her in Laura Ashley or any of the shops from White Flint or Mazza Gallery.

Heck, they even mention Houlihan’s at the end of the movie, so the writers, etc. obviously knew the vibe of the locals.

And Ally Sheedy was dressed too old as well. Our moms dressed like her.

Mare Winningham / Ally Sheedy or Lilli Taylor or Martha Plimpton

Emilio Estevez / Anthony Michael Hall or Kevin Bacon

Demi Moore / Jami Gertz or Ione Skye

Rob Lowe / I'd probably leave that Rob Lowe (Charlie Sheen would do, but RL is probably better)

Andrew McCarthy / I guess he's fine too

This was a really bad movie. I don't remember much of it except disliking Demi Moore's and Andrew McCarthy's characters and Mare Winningham's plot had to do with being overweight? Yuck. 'm glad I can't remember Ally Sheedy because her voice really bugs me. If Judd Nelson was in it too, same.

And gd I miss movies where people can be awful and messy, and we're allowed to still be interested in their lives.

Mare Winneham’s character is how I picture that author of posts in the fashion forum about summer sandals, or recommending LL Bean or Lands End clothing.
