So what are her options? Playing down on a strong team? |
| Bet you GA will implement Bio Banding next season |
As a PP said alrdy, Bethesda and Achilles uses it. Armour too according to PP but I personally only know of Bethesda and Achilles (don’t know enough abt Armours team). And to answer OPs questions, I’m only aware that MLSNext allows biobanding. ECNL and other girls leagues DO NOT allow bio banding. |
Neanderthal dunce |
Size has a massive effect on soccer at the younger ages. Unless you're smarter than all the research into the subject. |
Not really and certainly not more than most other team sports. Pre-puberty the tiny fast kids usually are the best on the field. As the other kids grow, they lose their advantage and become worse relatively. Then the parents look around for something to "blame" because Larlo used to be the best! |
Our experience has been that the most skilled kids are playing up, thats why they are the smallest on the field. As they get older, and the rest catches up on skills or size becomes a factor, they go back to playing on age. u sound like an SYC parent who whine abt biobanding when they lose, but you also know that a small skilled kid doesnt exist at SYC and biobanding will never be used there bc winning is all that matters at SYC, not development. SYC kids do their ind development on their own through small group training and private coaching. |
Not really unless the kid is timid. You use your body differently instead of whining that a large kid has some special advantage. Larger kids tend to have weakness smaller kids don't. |
She's not allowed to play down. She's going to end up choosing a different sport. The cutoff date combined with her being late to puberty are too much to overcome. |
Stop, there's all kinds of opportunities. For girls the equivalent of playing down is playing for the 2nd/B team. This is the difference between Academy and pay to play age bound soccer. There's always a way to play for girls unfortunately parents often won't accept playing on a lower team. Ironically as girls get older clubs struggle to find players because they've chased off so many with cuts, etc. Which means if you pay your dues on the 2nd team something will open up on the top team. |
One on one maybe but I’ve seen so many very talented late blooming kids get completely boxed out/shut down when multiple super large kids are defending against them (double teamed, etc). Everyone with a late bloomer thinks their kid can be the next Messi and size doesn’t matter but in 99.9% of the cases it’s true. One of my teens who plays another sport has gotten completely shut out this year, after multiple years of playing club, because now her sport only wants super tall girls in every position and there just are so many of them around here that it’s not an issue for the clubs to do this (supply/demand, this is volleyball). So I have major sympathy for the kids I see this happening to in soccer which one of my other kid plays. It stinks. But you can’t train height and size. |

US Soccer promotes Bio Banding.
With GAs recent admission to US Soccer, I would imagine this will be a common thing in the GA league |
Not true. GA is basically a copy of ECNL. This means showcases and focus is on highlighting players for college scouts. If US Soccer implements NWSL Next which would just be a copy of MLS Next then yes you would see biobanding in the girls game. NWSL Next and GA would most likely remain complely separate leagues because the end goals (playing professionally and playing in college) are very different things. |
| I will say, that in the DPL post, the logo looks like an ECNL logo.. |

Parent of a Dec boy who was really technically skilled and coaches always told him he was the smartest player on the field. Unfortunately he was small for his age. He had a club soccer coach from Europe who really liked him and played the entire game. He always had the most assists on the team because he could dribble around other players then find these great passing lanes and his timing was great too as a midfielder. However once the coach changed and the physically bigger kids really started having growth spurts when they were 11 and my son was 10 we realized there was no future in soccer for him.
He switched to a different sport and ended up doing well in it. He finally had his growth spurt in high school. He is now 5’10” as a junior and fast but no longer has any real interest in playing soccer on a team. He was playing soccer on the beach last summer with some friends who are on his high school soccer team and they all were amazed and wanted him tj try out for high school soccer but he said no way. So forget biobanding if you have a smaller boy born in the fall- find a new sport for them. We kept in touch with another small Nov born player from his team and they have been so frustrated with club soccer. |
