Neighbor is living her best life on Disability with "Long Covid"

I accidentally got a newer Federal colleague fired (or at least I suspect it).

This person - let's call them Kevin - had been on our team for about a year and was taking a lot of time off. They were only a couple years out of college and they added me on Instagram. They would constantly post photos from fun international trips.

While eating lunch with our manager and two other colleagues, we start talking about upcoming vacations around spring break. I mention that I want to get in a West coast ski trip and stated that I should probably hit up Kevin for some advice, as the pics from his recent ski trip looked awesome.

My manager made a weird face and then discreetly asked me to stop by their office after lunch. They asked me a bunch of questions about Kevin's ski trip and what I know about their past travels. I answered honestly, showed my manager Kevin's IG profile.

Kevin was back for a week and then basically disappeared without notice from our office. Radio silent, disappeared from social media. Like they didn't even exist.

Turns out that Kevin was milking sick leave and then short-term disability and using it to travel. They were still on two year probation (excepted service) and got the boot.

Neighbor was on worker's comp disability until his ex recorded him moving furniture and sent it to his employer.
Woman in, I think, MN, was on disability for many years, but then she competed in something like Mrs. Minnesota beauty competition and highlighted her skiing. That did it for her.
It may be she had enough symptoms to qualify at the time she qualified, and has gotten better. It could also possibly be that she has energy for short periods of time and then has to recover. Usually there is periodic review of disability status though. If you think you are able to observe enough evidence that she is capable of working continually and want to report it, go ahead, but be very sure. Like, when she says she doesn't think she'll ever be able to go back to work, does she describe why? Or does she clearly say she is just enjoying the paid permanent vacation too much?

It actually isn't.

How do you know she collects disability? Maybe when she got sick and initially had disability and received it for a period of time. And after she got better, she and her husband decided that she did not need to have the stress of work and that they could afford for her to stay home. I really don't understand how you can know the financial workings of a neighbor. Unless she publicly talks about it, which I cannot imagine being the case if she's out playing tennis.

The insurance policy is paying her. Why do you care?

Do you not understand how insurance works? When people like this awful woman take advantage, it goes up for all of us, which is precisely why we should all care. She's completely abusing the system.

OP should ask this neighbor for some advice on finding new hobbies, she clearly needs one.

One can have hobbies and still know that neighbor plays tennis and is going to Italy.
Are or you living in a cave?

My relative is on full-time disabilitiy (SSDI) and he gets about $1,500/month. There's no way he can afford a trip to Italy. How much do you think your neighbor is making from it?

It was pickleball. Doesn't count. My 95 year old neighbor plays it.

My brother was one disability for years, until he showed up stupidly one day to a review meeting of some sorts look amazingly buff and well built. This of course was compliment of the fabulous home gym he and his wife installed in their home and used every single day even though his back was so bad he couldn't (cough) walk and lift heavy items. That case worker called his bluff and cut him off. Btw, he is not a part of my life.

She isn’t suggesting she is making enough to fund Italy trip. She is saying she cannot be disabled to be able to do these sort of activities.

Unless she bribed some unscrupulous doctor to declare her disabled, she’s probably got long COVID. It’s pretty hard to get permanent disability.

Another who suggests that you report this to the agency’s OIG. An investigation will show whether her claim is legitimate. I don’t know why people find this so objectionable. It the claim is on the up and up, alls well for neighbor. If no t, neighbor deserves to be caught.

It’s actually very easy to get . You just need a letter from a doctor. I know many people who got a Schedule A letter to get a fed job and they didn’t need one

I knew someone who got permanent disability and didn’t seem that hard to do.
