Irrational things that turn you off about a house

Agree. Microwave venthoods that blow the gross cooking air and gas from the stove back into your face instead of outside are the worst. Makes for unhealthy indoor air quality.

90% of the time, stupidly large master bedrooms and/or bathrooms are either because the house is massive and they didn’t want it to be 10 bedrooms, or because there was an addition and the kitchen/family room are below and the new master suite is just following that footprint.

Upstairs washer and dryer. I understand the convenience but something about it bothers me. Laundry belongs downstairs.

I don't think this is irrational but HOA. Will never live in one

Agreed.

I hate bathtubs on the first floor.

What bothers you about this? Seems like a big plus to me, don't have to haul the kids upstairs to take a bath, and supports aging-in-place someday...

Every house I looked at w/ a full bathroom on the first floor was an estate sale. So you know someone died in the house. Shiver.

Not at all irrational. Truly the worst.

I hate when there's a lack of symmetry in a room. Like when a fireplace is off-center or when a family room has what I'd describe as a slanted ceiling because it's on the side of the house where the roof slopes so it creates an unsymmetrical room.

I like my HOA a lot but it is fairly relaxed. I appreciate that people can't let their garden get out of control, need to get their roofs clean, can't have front yard clutter or pods, and that the common streets are always pristine and beautifully maintained. We only pay $800/year and that is all well worth it to me.

cheap interior doors and knobs.

Just want to agree with you, OP. When we bought our 1900 rowhouse, the kitchen sink faced a wall. When we renovated (on a budget) we spent thousands extra to bring the big window to the backyard a few feet higher and put the sink underneath it. I think it has to do with what you grew up with. Washing dishes or prepping food while looking out at the backyard is a core childhood memory!

+2. I also need the kitchen sink to face a window, and the window must look out onto greenery.

+2. We have both as well, and it's well worth it.

+2. This is rational, not irrational.

- Cheap, realtor-directed "upgrades" to a house immediately before selling. Please stop doing this. Why make the new owner rip the crap out and add to the landfill? Just give me a credit.

- Small or nonexistent yards. My kids and dog need space.

- Crappy kitchens with dirty appliances and poor layout.
