Irrational things that turn you off about a house

What is a California closet?

This. It’s fine if it’s a really large deep California style island but the ones around the DMV are too narrow for the cooktop and practical use of the counter space on the other side.

I also can’t stand those half hexagon kitchens, catwalk balconies or two stray family/ living rooms with a vertical strip of stone going up to the ceiling. I also hate round pillars, especially in bathrooms.

They always seem to be next to the dining room, which means you can't expand your table for holidays into the living room.

When we were house hunting, I turned right around if we walked into a house with a sunken living room.

Dangerous for aging in place too

Just want to agree with you, OP. When we bought our 1900 rowhouse, the kitchen sink faced a wall. When we renovated (on a budget) we spent thousands extra to bring the big window to the backyard a few feet higher and put the sink underneath it. I think it has to do with what you grew up with. Washing dishes or prepping food while looking out at the backyard is a core childhood memory!

Maybe not necessarily the sink, but having a kitchen that doesn’t have any windows to the outside at all. Some houses have the kitchen right in the middle of the house, with all the other rooms around it, and that feels very stifling for some reason.
