Kids having similar profile with test optional at our large public have been accepted to JMU, Tulane, etc.

I missed the detail about the child preferring a smaller school. Was going to suggest College of Charleston but maybe that’s too big. UMW would make sense based of size, major, and location preferences.

+1 For the pre-law interest I know a couple kids doing well in law school admissions from Ursinus and Muhlenberg. Juniata has a strong mock trial team.
Susquehanna is a small school with good business program

This grades are not good enough for Wake, ED or not, not even close.

Last year, DC got into Wake RD with a 3.5 and test optional. No stellar ECs.

Yes, our college office recommends WFU to all students in this range and tells them to apply in august. All who have done so are in by mid-October. That’s one of the reasons it’s a hard admit in RD.

William and Mary is 53, no way that is an option I don't think.

W&M is unusual in that it has very high applicant qualifications but has features (small size, few grad programs so lower research investments etc) that lower it in the current USNWR formulation. Other schools in that ranking may still be options.

Would be super helpful if you could identify which private this is, thanks. Both of you.

St Lawrence University
High Point University
Macalester College
Providence College
Wheaton College
Bentley University

I'd pick schools a bit farter away so she gets bonus points for geographic diversity.

Would be really helpful if you could identify the private schools you are referring to.

In-State

- JMU (might be too big)
- Christopher Newport
- William & Mary (it's a reach but maybe possible with ED and test optional)

Out-of-State

- Dickinson
- Gettysburg
- Denison
- Fairfield
- The College of New Jersey
- Rollins College
- Elon
- Lafayette (would not get merit)
- Lehigh (would not get merit)

Agree. W&M admits are very similar to UVa admits.

I'd say W&M is a reach but not completely out of bounds. My DD had a 3.7 UW GPA with a downward trend (more Bs in 11th than 9th) with similar number of APs but also stronger test scores (1460). Did the interview and had, IMO, very good essays. She was waitlisted in RD, with the option to start Spring semester. Given that, I think she'd likely have gotten in if she'd gone ED (wasn't sure it was her #1).

So, work on the essays, be sure to do an interview, try to get the test scores up.

Other schools applied to, accepted to all with merit, were other LACs already mentioned + UMW.
