Have you actually read this book or did you just google "Books with 'house' in the title"?

Because I have read it and that title is incidental at best.

I beg to differ, poster. The building of the house and the house as a foundation for the family which owns it is fairly central to the novel, as much as many of the other novels recommended here with which I am familiar.

The house of the seven gables is a real New England mansion in Salem, Massachusetts not very far from where I grew up. It is open to the public for visitations and is also an active settlement house today.

Any Hawthorne scholar would take issue with your perspective, I think.

A Good House for Children. I read this as an ARC and thought it had some strong points.

The Villa. Also read this as an ARC. It was fine. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s turned into a movie/series.

Mexican Gothic. Actually disliked this one but it meets your criteria!

I very much disliked Mexican Gothic too but it does meet it. Dutch House is better. Home Before Dark by Riley Sager could fit too.

Highly, highly recommend it, one of my favorite books from last few years.

Me too! It was absolutely compelling and so twisty, but just all came together.

The best book I’ve read. I’m going to reread it, and I usually do not reread.

Thanks, I'm the one who posted House of the Seven Gables and I just came back to catch up on this thread and saw that response. Yes, I've read the book, and though it was years ago, what is most memorable to me is the role the house plays and how it represents the family itself. So I stand by my suggestion!
