I'm looking for fiction where the house could be considered a main character.
Examples I've read include Brideshead Revisited, Rebecca, I Capture the Castle, etc. I see a lot of lists with classics but am wondering about newer books published in the last five years or so? Thank you!! |
Stephen King's Fairy Tale |
The Little Stranger |
Not new but Gormeghast by Mervin Peake and Pat of Silver Bush by LM Montgomery would fit the bill. |
Starling House by Alix Harrow |
The Dutch House by Anne Patchett
House of the SEven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne We have always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson North Woods by Daniel Mason |
the hacienda |
It's middle grade, but The Vanderbeekers of 141th Street. |
Probably a stretch but Howl’s Moving Castle and the House of Many Ways |
Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver.
It is about a family who inherits a really old house that needs tons of work. The woman decides to research the history of the house to see if it qualifies to be on the historical registry, in hopes that the historical preservation society will provide some funding for all the repairs it needs. |
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson |
The Turner House by Angela Flournoy - excellent |
Mary Kay Andrews is an author who writes cozy mysteries. Many of her books involve a woman renovating an old house. I have read every book she has written. The two that most fit what you are looking for would be "The Homewreckers" and "The Fixer Upper". |
Flower in the Attic by VC Andrews (sort of kidding but it's great) |
Wow! Thank you for all of the suggestions. My TBR pile just increased by a dozen! |
