Did a lot of people from here apply to University of Florida for fall 2024?

I have a junior there and they have very few online classes. Maybe 1 or 2 the entire time. I do think it's dependent on major a bit. She's a science major.

My understanding is that it affects business students the most.

Does anyone know if the reputation of UF being cutthroat is legit?

It’s been good for my child. It’s huge and definitely no hand holding. Very much sink or swim, which is OK for this child. For some of my other kids, I think they would have gotten lost.
I don’t personally like the campus. I hate University that runs through there and every year a couple of students are killed as pedestrians. Lots of kids have scooters to get around which I also personally hate.
It’s very reasonably priced and my child is getting a very good education.

Errr, I feel like this would make national news if true.

Errr, this is a dumb comment. There are school shootings barely making the national news at this point.

Really? Tell me which college has a couple of students killed in school shootings each year, please.

You can double down but it’s a dumb comment that it can’t be true because you haven’t read it on national news. Links were posted.

So you can't answer. That's what I thought.

You got your answer, you just can't stop.
You said it's not happening because it hasn't been in the news.
Links were posted - one has three pedestrian deaths in a year. THAT is your answer.
Clearly you're not familiar with the campus at all. Now you've changed the question. It doesn't matter. No one cares.

OK, but that's not three pedestrian deaths EACH year, which is what you originally said.

It is so interesting to me that this post asks if any people here are applying to a school, when really no one here is applying, their kids are applying.

I’m not totally sure what that says, but it says something, and it is probably not good.

I don't need to go find the news articles for you, sir. You can research it if you're that interested.

Isn't DeSanti forcing out all the best profs with his crusade against education?

Unless you are a Florida resident, I don't see the appeal. Gainesville is a pit. At least Tallahassee is a semi-interesting city.

DD did get in last year and we did go to the admitted students presentation in Falls Church. It seemed like a great school and our friends who have experience with it are very successful. I have heard great things about the school.

Alas, DD chose a smaller school because she felt UF was waayy too big. We also heard that many of the classes are online, which was a turn off for us.

At her smaller school, everything is in person.

It's ranked highly, and political views are easily discarded when prestige is on the line.

100%!

You do realize that even in blue states like MD and VA there are like 30-40% republican voters who may view UF as a politically welcoming place

They currently live abroad but purposely got FL residency at some point and pay FL state tax there so they could apply in state for U Florida (knowing costs were so low for instate.) They never lived in FL before they left to live abroad.

Meanwhile their second ended up in school in TX.

We’ll see about the third.

There is no FL state tax.

- FL resident

Taxes come in many forms my friend - FL relies on property tax.

lol no tenured prof is going to abandon his sinecure.

Makes tremendous sense for in state kids due to low cost. Not as attractive to oos due to online classes and for some, DeSantis meddling.

That’s a stretch as the poster said they lived abroad. I know many people who got in-state tuition to Florida after buying property and it’s doable but they check time spent in the state. Is it possible to get in-state by just paying property tax?

More likely they are abroad with the military and are just not paying state income taxes.

We are FL military living in another state, and though we own property there, I can tell you that FL doesn't really who claims them as their state of residence. The state you ACTUALLY live in, however...
