DH could teach a clinic. His technique is just *chef’s kiss*

Seriously. Genius. You got a good one OP!

Agree. Really, that is the natural consequences of her demands for immediate answers. I am not able to commit now, so if you need a yes or no answer, it will have to be no. This will either lessen the amount you see them or stop her from demanding immediate responses.

I wish my husband said things like this to his mother!!!

Setting boundaries is fine, but do you like adults to treat you like a toddler?

WTH? Do you behave like a toddler? Then you get treated like one. Behave like a rational adult? Perfect. We'll get along just fine.

MIL is very sweet, I just think she gets anxious and likes to have things “settled.” But it has been increasingly hard to deal with as the kids get older and we have more and more things filling up the calendar to plan around. We usually can make things work, it’s just not an immediate yes. Thank you for the perspective.

She's anxious, or manipulative and your DH is used to her because she's always done this. My mother and MIL do the same thing to us. They want immediate answers to any invitation. An invitation is not a court summons. You do not have to respond immediately and they can wait a few days.

This is funny. My mom used this same technique on my when I was a nagging child. I use it on my kids. Perfectly acceptable way to handle it. Team DH.
