The hell you can’t.

Controlling an adult - not a good way to go.

Like you trying to control the mother.

How am I trying to do that? I’m just pointing out it’s a bad idea.

No, you aren’t pointing it out as a bad idea. You did, however dramatize it as controlling.

She literally said “how can I keep my kid from getting a tattoo”. That is literally the definition of controlling.

I think the word literally has control over you.
The definition of controlling is not “she literally said how can I keep my kid from getting a tattoo.”

Literally.

Sorry you are unhappy but it won’t help you to try to make others as unhappy.

Still waiting to hear how OP trying to stop her 18 year old from doing something is NOT controlling.

You don’t have some control over your kids in college? Are you their pal? Give us a break!

That line is for when they are younger.
When are you going to cut the umbilical cord.

This is DCUM. The answer to that is never.

Interesting arguments you make

Gish gallop?

There are so many non-permanent ways to decorate yourself.

If future fiancee has one, no need to worry about what happens bc that's the person who will care the most.

I have seen a number of bad tattoos on formerly attractive real estate.

I understand bodily autonomy completely. It just seems like there are a lot of pitfalls related to enhancing oneself with ink.

Tangent: The Sofia Coppola movie Dogfight shows a bunch of young guys getting "killer bee" tattoos right before shipping off to Vietnam. I think this is the kind of solidarity that sports people may be looking for? That's beyond aesthetics. Also frat markings.

Bribes work way better than showing him info on some random maori people.

OP's kid is D1 athlete! His college, housing, food, is free...and he's probably making millions in NIL money!

Um, no.

Um, yes.
Keep up. Some college athletes are making more money with NIL than some of the pros.

I’d just suggest that they’re are really sure about the design, and to put it in a place that is easy to cover up for future job purposes.

They don’t know you exist so probably doesn’t matter what you hope.

He plays a sport that has a huge tattoo culture, is playing D1 (not sure if this matters but seems like the pressure is on) and I want to figure out a good way to keep him from getting sucked into it while he's still relatively young. Once he has graduated and is older, he can make his own decision on that.

Any thoughts or advice?

That's not something you can do, unfortunately.

I just talked a lot about the stigma associated with tattoos when they were younger. They definitely understand that only losers have tattoos. But if they decide they want to be a loser, well, oh well. It's their body, their choice.

Keep up. Few do. Some is not all.

Now whether or not that's a good idea is debatable, but it seems to be working.

That sounds like an empty threat to me. Because if you do it, you'll end up with a heavily tattooed, failure-to-launch 30-year-old washing dishes at the local joint and living at home. Or, in the case of a female, squeeze out a few pups and collect that sweet, sweet child support while living in your basement.
