Kid reading sexually graphic writing

Not to hijack the discussion but what age would it be okay to allow my DS to read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? He found it on the shelf and started reading it. He is 14. I said he is too young. Thoughts?

Except there’s now a book (and it isn’t the first one, being traded around school-think it’s gone viral on tiktok) and it has very sexually graphic scenes in it. It’s otherwise just a regular love story as far as I can tell. I remember passing around contraband too (anyone remember Wifey lol) but I was an older teen. Mine is 13.

Would you let it go? Btdt? How to handle?

This is wildly inappropriate because someone that young is too immature to truly understand/ process graphic human sexuality, as they are years away from ever experiencing its intensity.

Unless, of course, the 7th grader is lgtbqia+ in which case they totally need to see it in graphic novels, specifically in the public school library.

Not that many years away.

No. Graphic rape incident.

Spent 80s reading VC Andrew's and Judy Blume (Wifey anyone)? If they understand it, they already understand it. If they don't, it'll go over their head.

Don't worry about it, let readers read!

If your 7th grader has a phone he has watched plenty of porn.

I remember reading Judy Blume in 6th grade in the lunch room. It seemed pretty scandalous back then. If it were my child, I'd leave it. I don't think we should censor our kids' reading.

Fine, imo. I read Lolita when I was about 10. I don't think I really got it, though. It just seemed creepy and weird and a little boring. Didn't destroy my fragile mind, though.

Gen Xer here, and we definitely read Forever by Judy Blume in 7th grade and passed around copies with the pages dog eared. I recall that being pretty racy.

I’m not familiar with the book in question (nor do I want to ask my daughters). But I do recognize that the tone and tenor of stuff now can be very different.

Okay just looked it up on Amazon and would have no idea from the cover that it is “spicy.”

These days the majority of romance novels are like that. A lot of books are getting covers changed from a dude with abs to a cute illustrated couple.

PP here, and I’m dying reading these Amazon reviews: “perfect gift for a 13 year old girl,” “got this as a gift for my granddaughter and she started reading it right away.”…

I’m generally anti-censorship, but I had a really hard time as an adult with the graphic rape as well, and would at least talk to him before he gets there. I’d say 16+

Gay fanfic about real world NHL players is a very popular read among some of my female friends. I don't claim to understand it, but I'm a straight man.

Crosby/Malkin LOL. Yes, it’s a huge thing, although I have no idea how NHL became THE sports fandom for RPF.

Kids reading vaguely inappropriate books and fanfic is a tale as old as time, and yes, it usually starts in middle school. At least they’re reading! Who knows, she might become a romance author someday too.

Name the book/author.

Not my kid, but if you want another example I'm a teacher and a sixth grader walked into my class with various books from the "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series. I asked where she got them, and she said her mom took her to the library. I was very uncomfortable by 11 year olds reading novels that I would deem "not-safe-for-work" at school, but hey... to each family their own!?
