large publics outside of MD - not southern

Also for the UVA, maybe Im wrong but assumed if we didn’t get into UMD, prob not in UVA and I think their tuition OOS is out of our price range. These are just my assumptions though.

I don't think anyone said UVA. They said JMU.

^Purdue, not Perdue

NP. Agree that TO is risky. Best to submit what you have, lay your cards on the table, and hope for the best.

OP, test optional is not the move if you are looking to reduce cost via merit scholarships at many state universities. Look at universities where your kid's test scores are in range for the school!

The exception may be CU Boulder, but that will probably be too expensive even with merit.

Those stats won’t get him in Penn State or Purdue much less as safeties. UVA is completely off the table.

lolol! my son just got in Perdue Engineering with a 4.11 weighted. 3.8UW is probably a 4.4+ weighted with all those APs. he also got in spend state and that was a major safety. granted his SATs are 1480 and he submitted.

for my son doing engineering both schools were not safeties. however non engineering if the OP had a high W GPA i’m sure they are.

i do think going TO in this climate is quite risky.

I think TO is risky too.

OP, your kid has strong GPA and AP’s. He should prep for the test. I think a 3.8 without test scores is different than 3.8 in rigorous classes with a good SAT. Unless he has someone other interesting qualities.

Someone upthread said “UVA is completely off the table.”

UMass-Amherst?

For merit, make sure to look at smaller private schools where his stats are in the upper range.

Wisconsin as a match

Ohio State has gotten quite competitive.

I also recommend UNH/UVM/UMASS, which are somewhere between a safety and match. I think your kid would get in with his stats. Esp UNH and UVM!

No Wisconsin and Ohio State with those academic numbers. This is 2024. Not 2000.

It’s a 3.8 unweighted. High enough for either of those schools.

These schools.

Saw SUNY too, great schools, but not a lot of aid offered for OOS.

Good luck

Last year my CS son from NOVA received merit offers from UMN, Ohio St and UMD. No merit from Pitt. Michigan St. would be good to research. Definitely merit from WVU. Good luck!!

SUNY OOS tuition is $28k and I know students that got $10K in annual merit. They’re an excellent affordable option, even for OOS. Many SUNY schools are seeking to attract non-NY students.

DS just got accepted OOS with merit aid to a public flagship up North that has a highly rated program in his major of interest. He has a 4.0 unweighted with AP s but a 3.8 unweighted is also competitive for admission so look at those. Pick a state that interests him, look at the freshman class profile and start there.

+1. Binghamton is very competitive but is seeking to increase their number of OOS students. Buffalo is another good choice with a lot going on in the area for college students.

3.8 with 10-12 APs seems strong to me. Does he have an SAT/ACT score?

Then you obviously don’t have a child going through the admissions process this year. Kids with much higher GPAs and rigor with impressive ACT and SAT scores are getting rejected and deferred right and left.

What? 3.8 unweighted could be 4.7 weighted. That absolutely could get you into UMD. I say this as a parent of a senior and recent grad. A 3.8 is nearly straight As their whole career!

Yes I was going to say this as well. My kid has about a 3.85 so far in the most rigorous courses with Bs in math (calc BC), with 10 AP classes. He’s a very competitive student at his school. I think it varies by school to be honest and grading system/grade inflation. Colleges seem to know.

OP here- yes, prob 4.7 just keep hearing how UMD from moco is getting really competitive and want some alternatives.

Depends on what he wants to study. CS/Eng with TO? Probably low chance.

Big, football, lots of opportunities, merit.

My bestie with great kids who are only okay students sent one to MN with a lot of merit and they were happy enough, kid had a good job well before graduation. But with younger they really worked a WI waitlist - they clearly still saw WI as a half step above MN. In end, got in and took WI with no merit over MN with some merit. (they had no need for merit so if you do, your math will look different)

My kid was in the same situation. UMN ended up being about $25K a year cheaper. Kid didn’t care between the two, so decision made.
