I don't think anyone said UVA. They said JMU. |

^Purdue, not Perdue
NP. Agree that TO is risky. Best to submit what you have, lay your cards on the table, and hope for the best. |
|
OP, test optional is not the move if you are looking to reduce cost via merit scholarships at many state universities. Look at universities where your kid's test scores are in range for the school!
The exception may be CU Boulder, but that will probably be too expensive even with merit. |
I think TO is risky too. OP, your kid has strong GPA and AP’s. He should prep for the test. I think a 3.8 without test scores is different than 3.8 in rigorous classes with a good SAT. Unless he has someone other interesting qualities. |
Someone upthread said “UVA is completely off the table.” |
| UMass-Amherst? |
| For merit, make sure to look at smaller private schools where his stats are in the upper range. |
It’s a 3.8 unweighted. High enough for either of those schools. |
t These schools. Saw SUNY too, great schools, but not a lot of aid offered for OOS. Good luck |
Last year my CS son from NOVA received merit offers from UMN, Ohio St and UMD. No merit from Pitt. Michigan St. would be good to research. Definitely merit from WVU. Good luck!! |
SUNY OOS tuition is $28k and I know students that got $10K in annual merit. They’re an excellent affordable option, even for OOS. Many SUNY schools are seeking to attract non-NY students. |
| DS just got accepted OOS with merit aid to a public flagship up North that has a highly rated program in his major of interest. He has a 4.0 unweighted with AP s but a 3.8 unweighted is also competitive for admission so look at those. Pick a state that interests him, look at the freshman class profile and start there. |
+1. Binghamton is very competitive but is seeking to increase their number of OOS students. Buffalo is another good choice with a lot going on in the area for college students. |
Depends on what he wants to study. CS/Eng with TO? Probably low chance. |
My kid was in the same situation. UMN ended up being about $25K a year cheaper. Kid didn’t care between the two, so decision made. |
