I hate work travel but I make too much money to quit

You will almost certainly wish you’d had more time with your kids, especially when they’re little (not sure the ages of your kids though). Maybe there are some people that this doesn’t not apply to, but given how sad you are about leaving them, I don’t think you’re one of those people.

If there’s a realistic alternative option where you still make enough money to support your family (or your spouse) does, take it and don’t look back. Don’t waste your life missing your kids.

You could consider talking to your manager about lessening the travel and see what they say.

You need to suck this up.
you are not gone for that long a month and that is a good salary (I make the same and HATE my job and don't consider quitting. If I liked it but just had to go away 4 days a month it would never cross my mind to quit)
Your kids will massively benefit from the money more than 4 days a month of your presence. no offense i'm sure you are very nice but..

OP here. For people asking about my job. . . .
I don’t want to share details other than I work high up for a small company and have a very unique story of how I got to where I am based on personal history of working with certain people who later hired me. It’s more of a “one thing led to another that led to another” that couldn’t be predicted or replicated and I was very lucky and also worked very hard for about 20 years before I made this much money.

You should be able to easily fully fund college for two kids in a single year of working like this. It’s inexplicable to me that college is not already fully funded with a HHI of close to $1M for five years. If you are miserable, meet your goal and quit!

i have comp similar to op and this is not the case.
first of all tax takes massive amount. Op is pulling in $330 max. and op's dh probably doesnt make what op does. plus you can only put a certain amount into a 529 a year no?

This sounds much more like separation anxiety than actually missing the kids. Maybe therapy could help ease the anxiety.

There’s no rule that you can only save for college in a 529.

I say this with kindness - but how much less could it be?!

i can't speak for OP, but you have to be willing to job hop, take risks and work after your kids go to bed every night pretty much for 1-2h as well as weekend work to go the extra mile, learn extra important stuff and be an SME in your field.

My DH did/does all of this and still only makes barely $400k in a good year. $600k sounds awesome.

How I dealt with some feeling bad about leaving kids behind for work was to superfund their 529 plans with my high income when they were young, which put me in a position to quit when they were in elementary school. Instead, I created better working conditions for myself - part-time, remote work with no travel required. It's so much easier to set work boundaries when you feel like you don't need work anymore.
