What’s stopping the people living in the sanctuary city of Chicago from housing these people? Why don’t the good democrats take them in to stop them from freezing to death?

What is Chicago supposed to do, pick up a stick along a roadside and wave it around Harry Potter style while yelling "Habitatum ex nihilo" expecting housing to magically appear out of nowhere?

That’s what Texas is expected to do.

It’s amazing that you don’t realize that.

No state or city can deal with the numbers of people flooding the border. Texas is showing people what has been happening there for years.

Wait until the hospitals, ERs, and schools of Chicago feel the full impact. It’s devastating. I lived in South Texas for 4 years and relocated for work recently. My family still lives there. It’s becoming worse by the day.

It is amazing that you don't realize that if it is wrong and a hardship to have no control over people "flooding" the state, it is EQUALLY IF NOT MORE wrong to intentionally do that to another state. It is as though people never learned that two wrongs don't make a right...

Translation: It’s ok for this to happen to Texas. When other states are forced to deal with a tiny percentage of what Texas deals with, it is instantly WRONG. Shame on Texas for showing other states how overwhelming this situation is. How dare they!

PP here and it is not OK for it to happen to Texas. We need to do much much more to secure the border.
It is ALSO not OK for Texas to ship these people to another city without any notice or coordination or attempt to locate a place that is prepared.

How are you not understanding that Texas is trying to stop people from rushing the border and to use official transit entry points. How is it we are a sovereign nation and literally a quarter of a million people have rushed our borders in one month alone!

According to the Voice of America, "Reuters and other news organizations estimate that 300,000 people attempted to cross the border in the final month of 2023, with about 50,000 of them coming through designated points of entry." What do you think Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California is supposed to do? There is NO MORE ROOM for migrants there. In contrast look at the comparably small numbers of migrants shipped by Texas:

Texas as of Jan. 12, 2024 has bused:

Over 12,500 migrants to Washington, D.C. since April 2022
Over 37,100 migrants to New York City since August 2022
Over 30,800 migrants to Chicago since August 2022
Over 3,400 migrants to Philadelphia since November 2022
Over 15,700 migrants to Denver since May 18
Over 1,500 migrants to Los Angeles since June 14

So in around a year and a half Chicago has received 30,000 migrants. THAT IS A DROP IN THE HAT! Where do you think these 250,000 people should go that arrived IN DECEMBER 2023 ALONE? Every state needs to share the burden. Chicago and New York don't need advance notice. They are already on notice they will continue to receive migrants until this crisis is over.

PP here and I AGREE there is a huge migrant problem.

Putting people on a plane and dropping them with no notice is not in any way “stopping people from rushing the border.” It is also not a viable way to solve the border problem.

And completely unChristian. Abbott is such a religious hypocrite. Would love to see the pope ex-communicate him over this.

It would be a shame if the wheelchair bound Governor Abbot was left on the street in the Chicago winter to fend for himself.

Me thinks he hasn’t experienced any hardship in a while.

I’m sorry, what? Did you just say a man in wheelchair hasn’t suffered hardship?

+1
Why not shut down O'Hare and just keep them there so they don't have to go outside at all? Chicagoans wouldn't mind.

Why should Texas and other states on the frontlines deal alone with the burden of undocumented immigrants and the effects of failed national immigration policy? It’s perfectly fair to share the burden. Let Chicago, NYC, and other blue cities deal with it just as they expected El Paso, Laredo, and Brownsville to deal with it.

Yes, exactly. Not sure what the bleating is about from the blue cities who have turned a blind eye to the border crisis under Biden.

Another liberal here who is the daughter and wife of immigrants, and is typically pro-immigration - and I totally agree with you. This is a huge problem and we can't underestimate the burden this puts on border states like Texas. However, Abbott would get a lot more support if he coordinated and tried to cooperate with blue cities and states to take migrants in. "Hey, I have three busloads that have family in Chicago and want to go there, will there be support waiting for them if they leave on Thursday?" Then, if Pritzker says no, we can't handle them, everyone will see him as the hypocrate he is.

I'm a Chicago native who lived for several years in Texas. Perhaps I'm naive to think that states should be working together here since the Feds seem to be doing nothing about this problem. Blue states and cities should absolutely be stepping up to the plate here.

DP. I agree with you - however, I think this is the only way Democrats such as Eric Adams, Pritzker, etc. will be outraged enough to lobby Biden to secure the border. If everyone was cooperating with one another, there wouldn't be the push needed on Biden and his administration to DO SOMETHING.

Do you mean in Mexico?

So you feel Abbott/Texas should just keep a stiff upper lip and deal with this migrant crisis on their own dime. Got it. Now THAT is sociopathic.

Gov. Pritzker Signs Legislation Further Establishing Illinois as the Most Welcoming State in the Nation
Press Release - Monday, August 02, 2021

Issues Executive Order Establishing the Welcoming Illinois Office

Four New Bills Further Expand Protections for Immigrant and Refugee Communities

AURORA - Governor JB Pritzker today signed HB 121, SB 667, SB 1596 and SB 2665 into law, legislation expanding protections for immigrant and refugee communities and further establishing Illinois as the most welcoming state in the nation. The new laws strengthen the TRUST Act and make Illinois the second state in the nation to require local officials to end partnerships with ICE, address hate crimes against immigrant communities, expand workplace protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, and create the Illinois Immigration Impact Task Force to ensure state programs and policies best serve immigrant residents.

Ha! Kind of reminds me of the OG Eric Adams. You know, before reality struck.

None of this is in anyway responsive to the issue.

DP. What "issue"? The left has been gaslighting for years, insisting there IS no border issue. Everything is under control.

You really do think it's ok for the border states to have to CONTINUE shouldering this enormous burden on their own, don't you? Of course you do.
