Anyone following the viral Harvard University *Extension School* controversy?

It’s hilarious that the right wing pretends to not care about Ivy “snobs” and “elitists” but they are secretly so desperate to belong that they’ll buy a bogus open admit online master’s degree like Rufo. Or not so secretly do belong like double Ivy alums Ted Cruz and DeSantis.

Someone in my family did similar online classes with MIT. They did it because those happened to be the classes that fit their schedule, and their budget, and had the content they wanted. They were working and parenting and the last thing they wanted was to be driving to a campus and socializing with classmates.

I think anytime you condemn a whole group of people because you don’t like one of them it’s wrong.

No, my guess is your family represented their classes accurately. This individual claimed to have a master's degree from Harvard, not one in extension studies. They are not one and the same.

Seems if someone is throwing around a lot of charges about honesty and merit, their CV would then align accordingly.

DYK how many places run these programs? Columbia has one in general studies, believe same @ Penn. So many schools have them. Heck, does USDA still run an extension school? That said, they are extension programs.

My nephew, who is not American, and lives abroad, has attended Harvard classes during the summer. I don't know if it's the same as the extension school, but he and his family are fine with paying tuition and travel for this experience. I am dubious, but if he can parlay this into better job offers...

What is the difference between a "real" Harvard degree awarded 10+ years ago and a Harvard Extension School master's degree awarded less than 3 years ago? What about students who were forced to attend "real" Harvard Medical School online during the pandemic, https://hms.harvard.edu/news/covid-19-curriculum

Do degrees (from anywhere, not just Harvard) lose their inherent value over time? If so, doesn't it make financial and practical sense for adults 30+ to continue to keep their minds and skills sharp by obtaining more certificates and degrees online as they progress through the lifespan?
