If You Made Health Resolutions For 2024, How's It Going?

What did you get out of dry January last year? I’m trying it this year, so far so good but going to a party tonight so it will be harder.

First, it was harder than it should have been, which was a red flag.

Second, I truly felt much better after about a week without wine -- better sleep, better mornings, better attitude.

Third, my annual bloodwork two months later (March) was PERFECT. Not true the year before.

I also managed to reduce my consumption for several months after DJ. Then we went on vacation, and to a 4-day wedding, and to the beach and I was back to nightly wine. Then the holidays and fuggedaboudit. Time for another annual reset.

Would you consider yourself an alcoholic?

I consider myself a heavy drinker. Alcoholics can't do DJ because they can't go cold turkey without withdrawals that can be life threatening. That isn't me. But I do need to drink less, and I'm working on it.

I joined a gym and am doing strength training. I’m 49 and that’s the one thing that will really help me as I age. Nothing else. I know myself and if I try to do too much it’ll all fall apart soon enough.

So far so good. I'm doing a 30 day yoga program, walking 10k steps daily, drinking more water, and I've quit drinking. I've overindulged in both food and drink in the wake of some stressful parenting issues with our SN kid, and I'm aiming for healthier habits and coping skills for myself this year.

Do you mind sharing what you stuck with from last year?

I’ve recommitted to my 2023 goals of achieving a healthy BMI through increased movement and mindful eating. I lost 35 lbs last year and got within 5 lbs of my goal, but I pretty much lost all steam by 4Q and regained a few pounds over the holidays. I feel encouraged that my body has done a better job self-correcting- I really feel much better when I follow my plan.

My plan is simple- 1500 avg cals/day, weighted to give me more on high effort days (usually weekends), with walking or some other relatively low intensity workout 5-6 days per week. As I get back on track I’d like to ramp up the activity and add more strength training in 2024. My diet is varied, I shoot for 30% protein daily, and nothing is off limits except maybe fried food because it makes me feel like garbage. I don’t do well when I declare whole groups of food off limits. My calorie goals combined with how hungry I usually am naturally restrict the amount of alcohol I drink and sweets that I eat by forcing me to make better choices to feel full.

I’ll still be pretty flabby at goal so I’m guessing I may have to get more stringent with my diet once I get there, but when I work this plan it works for me so back on it. I’m already down 3 lbs of holiday bloat just this week alone.

Anyone looking for info and support re: sugar and processed foods...

The free Quit Sugar Summit starts tomorrow, both free & online.

Great speakers, including Dr. Lustig, Dr. Georgia Ede, Dr. Vera Tarman who is an addiction medicine doctor, Joan Ifland who wrote the textbook, literally, on sugar and processed food addiction, and others.

https://quitsugarsummit.com/jan-2024-quit-sugar_summit_registration

I usually do a "reset" in January, higher protein, little sugar, but am finding it harder this go round. Have had a stressful few days and am having a lot of sugar cravings. Signed up for above and am hoping to get both info and inspo to push through.
