Not a math teacher I see. We accidentally only had 170 days of school last year. It was the anomaly - you got 10 free days off. This year is back to normal with 180.

180 days is the state legal minimum for days in school. Why on earth are you advocating for less than the minimum?

APS used to count by hours which is also allowed. But that wasn't good enough for you and your friends. Congrats, you've burnt out the teachers and got yourself 3 more days of babysitting where the kids watched movies.

Post-pandemic, APS did attempt to justify counting by hours rather than days- the state disagrees that this is allowed and specifically said that 180 days is the starting point, and then, in case of snow, etc- can switch to hours. APS reverted back to 180 days. This is a good thing.

NP - I don't know anything about what the state said, but it is absolutely the case that prior to 2020 APS stuck to 180 days as the standard.

And yet they started after Labor Day, had a 10-11 week long summer, and the school day was 10 minutes shorter. They always used hours, not days, when accounting for snow days.

Completely disagree. The 3 days before break worked well. Having the whole week off would have been luxurious, but a VERY early start to break.

Parent here. It doesn't help when your child's teachers are telling them it's not worth coming and essentially encourage them not to. Yes, that's what multiple teachers did. Then there were also a few teachers who let them know they weren't going to be there themselves - so, a substitute...and we all know what that means.

And no, not "the rest of us - parents....would have much preferred two weeks off." Speak for yourself. You don't speak for me, a parent who does NOT prefer long winter breaks. Stop using me and others as part of your every-opportunity-conceivably-possible axe-grinding.

Look at this as being a pro social skill to encourage in yourself: sometimes going with the flow and allowing other opinions to be the majority is good for society even when your opinion/preference isn’t being expressed in the solution to the issue.

My whole point was that nobody is going to be 100% happy. That implies compromises and "going with the flow."
Democracy, however, does not mean using other people. PPP is the one taking the "my opinion only" attitude by assuming "the rest of us" share their opinion about winter break. And we're just talking about winter break and a school calendar, for cryin' out loud.

There is clearly someone on this forum who takes every opportunity - or creates one when it doesn't directly present itself - to bash APE. Don't you think THAT is the closed-minded un-democratic attitude blockading discussion, compromise, and consensus?!
