D - and I know I'm the outlier. Winter break is way too long. |
180 days is the state legal minimum for days in school. Why on earth are you advocating for less than the minimum? |
APS used to count by hours which is also allowed. But that wasn't good enough for you and your friends. Congrats, you've burnt out the teachers and got yourself 3 more days of babysitting where the kids watched movies. |
We all know this particular group of parents hates teachers so that's probably a feature and not a bug for them. |
that is absolutely untrue. APS has always had 180 days of school. Post-pandemic, APS did attempt to justify counting by hours rather than days- the state disagrees that this is allowed and specifically said that 180 days is the starting point, and then, in case of snow, etc- can switch to hours. APS reverted back to 180 days. This is a good thing. |
where did the state say this? |
Not that PP, but what are you talking about? https://law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/title8/agency20/chapter131/section150/#:~:text=The%20standard%20school%20year%20shall,in%20grades%20kindergarten%20through%2012. “ A. The standard school year shall be 180 instructional days or 990 instructional hours.” Notice the “or”? |
This year's winter break for Arlington was awful.
For the short break, we really should have had today/Tuesday the 2nd off. |
A |
+1 Next year we get the whole 2 weeks though going back on the 6th. |
APS winter break has typically been less than 10 days. Look it up. |
Apparently, they did not, or they are choosing to misrepresent. Notice they could not point to the supposed place where the state said 180 only, probably because it doesn't exist because as you point out there's that state law that says they can go by hours. We have the Arlington parents for education lobbying group to blame for the push for 180 days at all costs and the sucky vacation and burned out teachers we got as a result. |
No we should have had the full first week. That half week made no sense at all. |
APS has always had more than 180 days before the pandemic and Duran. Now we're struggling to keep 180. APE is right to fight for these days. |
NP - I don't know anything about what the state said, but it is absolutely the case that prior to 2020 APS stuck to 180 days as the standard. |
