| SLC Airport is a great airport and Delta has nonstops to all 3 DMV area airports. |
East Coasters generally don't know the U so you are bound to get some interesting takes on this listserve. My non-LDS (non-anything) kid loves it. Outdoorsy kids LOVE the U - hiking, climbing, and skiiing/snowboarding after class every day is living the dream. There are not a ton of LDS - and the hard-core go to BYU. It would be easy to find like-minded students as an outdoorsy kid - I would definitely recommend visiting because environs alone will take your breath away. It also has a great program where OOS students can get residency by sophomore year - and they actually help you navigate that path - so you are paying in-state tuition by sophomore year - making it cheaper than UVA or UMD for the last three years. Summer semester is also always instate. They have a ton of money coming in - building beautiful new dorms and pumping money into their business and STEM programs. It used to be a full-on commuter school, but they've been actively trying to shed that for the last few years - and lots of West Coasters (California especially) are there now. |
And gymnastics, and basketball, and football, and amazing climbers, and top game design program - but sure, let's dunk on the supposed plethora of LDS students. |
| Utah grad here, now in managerial position in the DMV area. I highly recommend U of U for great academics, safety, culture, sports, and outdoor activities. The community of LDS students is not as large as you would think and, from my experience, they don’t discuss religion with their non-LDS friends. In addition, I believe U of U allows in state tuition for OOS students after the completion of freshman year. |
People who dislike plagiarism. |
And you no doubt consider yourself to be openminded. |
I went to HS in SLC and my dad was a prof at the U. We are not Mormon. “Dealing with the Mormon community”? Wow, you don’t know many Mormons do you. My HS was probably 50/50. So I had lots of Mormon friends. Yes. Rule it out if you can’t cope with people who have a different religion than you. But really, that’s sort of required do living in any college community. |
| The girlz there are incredible. Not ASU level, but way hotter than most people would think when they think Utah. |
| The U was ranked by WSJ above UCLA and AZ |
BC is Boston College, I would imagine. Apparently blasting Catholics makes poster boards feel better about being an imbecile. |
Why is that fun |
| It’s a great school for kids who are studious, outdoorsy, not competitive, not super religious (those go to the Y), and artsy. Kids work hard and get outdoors bs work hard part hard. |
| I now live in the mountain west - so so so many of the smartest kids in this region stay and go instate. Culturally it’s a thing to want to go to state school for many kids here, they think “why would I want to leave?” Also financially in state makes sense and is “normal” for a larger portion of the people here. We are double professional household and are encouraging in state college for our kids. Utah is well respected in the west. |
| I gave a talk there a few years ago. It is a super beautiful setting. |
