Me too. I’d have to count my syllables as something like 2 & 1/2…

Same. Kind of 2 1/2. Grew up in the western exurbs of Philadelphia.

Melancholy

Wednesday is similar.

And some people pronounce nucular as nuclear.

Wednesday is NOT similar. Nobody in the world pronounces Wednesday with 3 syllables.

I think you got your nucular and nuclear around the wrong way. The actual word is nuclear. Some Americans pronounce it as nucular. How did that happen?

There is no silent "o" in melancholy.

Silent e's are common. Silent o's are strange and more regional dialect.

Like opossum.

I'm so confused.

do you pronounce opossum, "oppsum?" or Melancholy, "melankly"??

Neither have silent o's. Neither does broccoli.

NP. Arguing that commonly used, dictionary given, pronunciations are "wrong" is stupid.

To be perceived as having erudition, I pronounce all the letters in all the words. o-pos-sum.

Of course, that trash dictionary Merriam-Webster gives both pronunciations for broccoli and opossum. I know that only one of those pronunciations is right and the other is for uneducated children. My suffering is great, Lord give me strength to endure these people.

DP. What dictionary pronunciation gives opossum or melancholy as with a silent middle "o"? Are you able to cite this?

I’m with you on Wednesday and caramel and drawer, but my broccoli has 3 syllables.

(I say 3 syllables, grew up in New England but with immigrant parents for whom English was not a first language)

Same. Massachusetts without immigrant parents.
