There is no silent "o" in melancholy. Silent e's are common. Silent o's are strange and more regional dialect. |
Three syllables. Pacific Northwest. |
Same, from NJ. If I think about it, I know it’s 3 and pronounce it correctly. If I’m just talking quickly, it definitely comes out as 2. |
Brock-lee sounds like a baby talk version of it or something lol. Do you want some wa-wa with your brock-lee?
3 |
This but 4th generation DC. |
Sort of 2.5 - with a tiny pause at the ck sound. 3rd generation DC. I code switch though. |
Like opossum. |
3. Raised in Northern VA. |
3 syllables - NYC. |

I'm so confused. do you pronounce opossum, "oppsum?" or Melancholy, "melankly"?? Neither have silent o's. Neither does broccoli. |
Three. Brock-uh-lee. Texas until 9 yo, and then midwest. |
I said 2 and I also pronounced Wednesday and caramel with two syllables and drawer with one. If I’m thinking about it, I do use pronounce all of the syllables for those words—it might depend on who I’m talking to or whether it’s in a phrase. |
NP. Arguing that commonly used, dictionary given, pronunciations are "wrong" is stupid. |
Same with me. I had never thought about whether I was saying the word properly or not before this thread. Turns out I don't say it properly. |
