Does Tenleytown feel dangerous?

Anonymous
If you don’t feel safe here, you should move. It’s just that simple. Your safety and peace of mind matter more than other people’s opinions. Stats can help but stats won’t help you sleep at night if you FEEL unsafe or uncomfortable.

DC has a high murder rate. Year to date there have been 2 homicides in Ward 3. Neither were in Tenleytown. Crime in Tenleytown area (YTD) is mostly robbery and auto theft. Still not great but property crime, not violent crime, is primarily what is happening in this area of DC.

Let’s take LA out of it since it’s such a large jurisdiction. Let’s look at DC vs The Bronx, which is more densely populated than DC and has more than its share of poverty.

DC has 712,000 people and 230 murders so far this year.

The Bronx has double DC’s population at 1.4 million people and has 108 murders this year.

DC has double the murder rate of the most dangerous borough in New York, but please tell us more about how it is safe because your cousin said so.

Sure thing. The OP asked about Tenleytown. Tenleytown is in Ward 3. There have been 2 homicides YTD in Ward 3. DC, like many cities, is made up of many different neighborhoods.

No one said that you were going to get murdered in Tenleytown. You’re just buying into a city that has twice as many murders per capita than The Bronx. You won’t get murdered, but there are a lot of ancillary effects that come with living in such a dangerous city.

Do we want to start comparing DC’s carjacking stats to other cities? There are 800 this year so far in a city of 712,000.

I’m assuming you don’t live here. So you’ve made the right decision for you. If that’s the case, why does DC crime bother you so much? Unless you do live here and want to leave but feel you don’t have a choice? Very odd.

I don’t like the cold so I choose not to live in Chicago or Minneapolis. See how easy that is? Then I go a step further and don’t blather on about the average winter temperatures there and how icy the roads are compared to Miami and how the wind is excruciating relative to Sao Paolo, etc.

However, if you do live here, I suggest you move to the Bronx since you seem to be enamored with its relative safety. Bon Voyage!

Actually, it seems like a lot of people who post here truly believe this.

My kids go to school near the Tenleytown stop and we’re there every day. I do not feel unsafe.

Plenty of us work in DC and commute through DC. Crime, like car jackings, impact us just as much as residents.

Ah, yes. The commuter complainers. You guys are the best!

Good lord, how do some of you Chicken Littles summon the courage to leave your houses?

A better question is what will it take for you too cool for school, cynical DC Homers to admit that crime is bad in the city. DC is extremely unsafe compared to places like NYC, Boston, and LA. It has a worse murder rate than Chicago and Philly and if the trend lines stay in track it will have a higher murder rate than Baltimore in a couple of years.

Does it need to be as dangerous as Mexico City for you to acknowledge how bad it is? Is being one of the most dangerous large cities in America not enough for you?

What are you talking about? Mexico City’s murder rate is about a third of DC’s and is closer to Salt Lake City or Charlotte.

DC currently has a higher murder rate than Baltimore.

So car jacking are OK if the victim only works or commutes in DC. This head in the sand attitude is why home rule is failing.

How about a commuter tax like NYC? Give you some skin in the game.

I consider myself to be a liberal/progressive person who loves cities, but I have to acknowledge that Tenleytown has gotten worse in the past 3 years.

My DH and I rented a house in Tenleytown in the late 1990's (when we were in our 20's), and it was great. We could not afford to buy a house in Tenleytown, and so we bought a place just 1 mile away in Bethesda (20816).

I still frequently go to Tenleytown for church (St. Columba's), to shop at the Target, and to pick up visitors at the Metro stop.

I used to go to that 24-hour CVS when my kids were sick in the middle of the night, but I tried to do that recently and it definitely had a scary feel that it did not used to have.

In 2019 at approximately 3 pm on a weekday, I was parked at the orthodontist office in those townhouse-type office buildings on River Road (near the Container Store). I was taking my daughter to the orthodontist. A young man smashed the windows of our vehicle and ran off with my purse. He purchased many Metro fare cards on my American Express card.

Why do our mayors tolerate loitering that reduces the quality of life of all stakeholders (including the mentally ill). The homelessness and loitering problem is too much to deal with. I would have liked to live in Tenleytown, but am honestly glad to be in Bethesda (walking distance from Tenleytown). It feels so much safer, even though it's just 1 mile away.
