Let's be honest about why you posted here. You were looking for validation on your already made decision to not pursue a Wrangler for your kid. There is nothing anyone could post on this thread that would get you to change your mind. But now you can go to your son/daughter and say, "See, I asked around, even online, and Wranglers aren't safe, so you can't have one. I tried, aren't I a great mom?"
You also clearly missed the sarcasm of the prior poster who begged you to not get a Wrangler because they thought you would take the fun out of it. Many other posters here, as is normal for DCUM, have no direct experience with a Wrangler. Instead, they jump onboard with what they feel, what they have heard, and/or what they have read online. The Wrangler owners actually offered you some of the best feedback. But, like I said, you have already made up your mind and just wanted validation. I have a Wrangler. I have no problem with my kids driving it, as long as I don't want to drive it myself. I'm not worried about safety any more than I would be in any other vehicle. The Wrangler is FUN, SAFE, and far more practical than any non-Wrangler owner would care to admit. |
OP. What's your problem? My mind wasn't made up and I was looking to understand the opposite view, and I think there were some very helpful posts here that do give me some concrete, objective points to consider. I framed the question the way I did to elicit responses - people tend to post when they're offended either way. |
I agree with the guy who said you were forbidden from owning one. You’re not a Wrangler person. I doubt your DD is either, unless she’s rebelling and trying to be 180 degrees apart from you. |

Also, the duck person needs to sell theirs and buy a bronco. If someone wants to leave a duck on mine, it better be from Peter Chang's. |
| We have the Wrangler 4xe. I absolutely love it but there is no doubt that the handling is quite different from our other SUV--it's just not as tight and I could imagine an inexperienced driver would be more prone to swerve out of their lane. We got the full safety package and the weight of the battery makes this model less likely to roll. In any case, I'm a huge fan but I also worked a long time to buy a fun car to drive and I'd prefer if my kids did too. |
It's funny as mine is much tighter than my old SUV. The turning is far sharper. It also makes a difference if you have a sport, sahara or rubicon or lifted. A rubicon or lifted is going to be very different from a sport. If I were buying for a kid, I'd buy a sport and not lift it. And, we got all the safety features too but I had to custom order it. We considered the 4xe but we don't drive enough for the gas/cost of the wrangler to make a huge difference. |
You Wrangler people do realize that your tough brand has been appropriated by rich, white private school boys and girls, right? Especially the giirls? |

OP, you should just eject from this thread because a LOT of people in this area will tell you why its ok or justified (just look at how many teenagers and college students you see driving them around the DMV). I've owned two wranglers, one of which I lifted and did the whole off-road thing for a couple of years, and I loved them. But I still wouldn't buy one for my kids, and that doesn't make me a kill-joy. I just don't think the small incremental risk is worth it, they cost a lot now, and newer jeeps are less unreliable and more costly to maintain... though some people will argue otherwise.
Jeeps are great, but I'm not choosing my kids cars based on "fun"... but rather price, safety, cost of maintenance and insurance, reliability, practicality... fun is low on the list for a kids first car. But a lot of parents in this area, especially those with $$$ see them as fun toys to buy their kids. And that's ok, it's their right to make their own decision. I just happen to believe that my kids will be just fine without me buying them a convertible or sports car. You do you. |
Wranglers opps CJs were cool at Langley back in the eighties. Still cool today!! Had many good times on the floodplain from Deepwoods to Algonquin Park!! Mudding was fun!! . Good times!! Even at 57 I still play in the mud with Jeeps!! Why not let your kid have a fun enjoyable Jeep?? Will she care about a Volvo if you make her drive one?? Nope! |
| CjJ5 Cj7 YJ JK now 4xE that’s how I roll |
| Rich brat car. Lots of Georgetown Univ students with big Jeeps and out of state plates parked all over the neighborhoods adjacent to campus. |
I see what you did there. I agree 3.6 times. |
I’m all for it. They’re taking good care of future parts-donors and preserving my future trail rigs by only driving them on the street, ensuring and ample supply of lightly used Jeeps I can turn into off-road rigs. God Bless them for it! |
A “Wrangler person”. You people are so full of yourselves. |
